What is Correct Score Betting?

Correct score betting is simple: you predict the exact scoreline of a match. Instead of simply choosing which team will win, lose or draw, you need to predict how many goals or points each side will score by the end of the game. 

For instance, in a match between Manchester United and Chelsea, if you believe Chelsea will beat Manchester United 2-1, you can select 2-1 as your correct score prediction. Your bet only wins if the match finishes with exactly that scoreline. You’ll lose your bet if the match ends 1-0, 3-1, or 2-0, for instance, in favour of Chelsea. Even though Chelsea won in these cases, the exact score wasn’t the same as you predicted.

While correct score prediction is most popular in football, the same principle applies to other sports. However, bookmakers may present it differently. For example, in tennis, you could predict that a player will win a best-of-three-sets match 2-1. In some cases, you may also see options based on the exact set scores. 

Regardless of the sport, the principle remains the same. You are not just predicting who will win the match. You are predicting exactly how the match will finish. What Does "Other" Mean in Correct Score?

Bookmakers cannot list every possible scoreline, so most correct score markets include an "Other" option. Some sites split it into "Any Other Home Win", "Any Other Draw" and "Any Other Away Win".

"Other" covers every result that does not appear in the list. For example, if the list stops at 4-4 and the match ends 5-1, an "Other" bet wins. The scores it covers vary by bookmaker, so check the market rules before you bet.

Why Are Correct Score Odds Higher Than Match Result Bets?

In a standard 1X2 market, you only need to predict one of three outcomes. The match ends in a home win, a draw, or an away win. On the other hand, correct score betting offers more possible outcomes. A football match could finish 1-0, 2-0, 0-2, 1-1, 2-2, 0-0 and so on. You must choose one exact result, and any other result means your bet loses.

For example, if you back Arsenal to beat Liverpool in a 1X2 market, your bet wins whether Arsenal win 1-0, 2-1, 3-0, 5-2 or any other winning scoreline in favour of Arsenal. However, if you select Arsenal to win 2-1 in the correct score market, your bet wins only if that specific result occurs. That's why the correct score market is a high-risk, high-reward betting option.

Because each scoreline has a lower probability than the overall market, predicting it is harder and carries higher odds; higher odds reflect the difficulty of predicting the market correctly, but they don't mean better chances of winning.

Here is how the difference looks on a bet slip. Your return is your stake multiplied by the odds. At illustrative odds of 2.00 for an Arsenal win, a ₦1,000 stake returns ₦2,000. At illustrative odds of 9.00 for Arsenal 2-1, the same ₦1,000 returns ₦9,000, but only if the match ends exactly 2-1.

How to Play Correct Score on Nigerian Betting Sites

The steps are similar on most Nigerian bookmakers, whether you use a mobile site or one of the betting apps available in Nigeria.

1. Log in or register. You must be 18 or older to open an account.

Beyond the number of goals a team has scored and conceded, it helps to check each team's home and away records. Some teams are much stronger at home, while others perform better away.

Their home and away scoring and defensive records can help you identify these tendencies. Combine these with recent form to narrow your options to more realistic scorelines.

Head-to-Head History

Previous meetings between the same teams can also offer you valuable insights. For instance, if recent matches have regularly produced low-scoring results, you may want to consider a similar pattern again.

That said, never take head-to-head history as a prediction on its own. Managerial changes, tactical shifts, player departures and new signings can all change how teams play over time. Instead, combine this with current scoring patterns and home or away performances for a broader picture.

Over/Under Goals Odds

The over/under 2.5 goals market shows how many goals the bookmaker expects in a match. If "under 2.5" is the shorter price, the bookmaker expects a tight game, pointing to scorelines such as 0-0, 1-0, 1-1, or 2-0.

You can choose the scoreline you think is most likely and add it to your bet slip. For example, in our Chelsea vs Manchester United illustration above, your single pick could be Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United, while disregarding other possible scores.

Since you're making a single pick, base it on solid research and consideration. Make sure you have done proper analysis rather than picking a scoreline with attractive odds.

Additionally, even when one outcome looks more likely than the others, there's no guarantee that the match will finish that way. Some punters treat this pick as a banker bet, the selection they feel most confident about, but a banker is never a guaranteed result.

Covering Two or Three Scorelines in One Match

Some punters place separate stakes on two or three scorelines in the same match, such as 1-0, 2-0 and 2-1. Only one of these bets can win, so your outlay goes up, and your profit goes down.

Say you stake ₦1,000 on each of three scorelines, so your outlay is ₦3,000. If the winning score is priced at 8.00, you get back ₦8,000, a profit of ₦5,000. Cover too many scorelines, and a winning bet can return less than you spent. 

Combining Correct Score Picks Across Multiple Matches

You can also combine correct score selections from different matches into an accumulator bet. For example, you could predict a 2-1 win in one match, a 1-1 draw in another and a 2-0 home win in a third match, then combine all three selections.

Collectively, these picks can produce a higher combined price because every selection must be correct for your bet to win. This approach can offer a higher payout.

However, higher combined odds don't make the bet safer. Instead, it compounds the risk because a single incorrect scoreline can cost you the entire bet. If you choose this approach, remember that each match score you add means another exact outcome you must get right to win.
