Gallagher rejoins young Lions

Conor Gallagher has returned to the England Under-21s fold after missing out on a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s senior squad yesterday.

The Chelsea midfielder, 22, started in the Three Lions’ 4-0 loss to Hungary in June having impressed on loan at Crystal Palace in 2021-22 but will link up with Lee Carsley’s youngsters instead this month.

On the decision, Carsley said: "We welcome Conor Gallagher back to the group, which is another example of us having a fluid pathway across our national teams. 

"I know Conor will take to the pitch with as much pride in wearing an England shirt for the U-21s as he would for the seniors. 

"He, like all of our players, can continue to take comfort in the fact that Gareth will always keep one eye on their progress — there is no glass ceiling."

Gallagher joins other Premier League regulars such as Harvey Elliot and Anthony Gordon for upcoming clashes with Germany and Italy’s youth sides, while there is a first call-up for Manchester City defender Luke Mbete.

Howe’s your luck

Newcastle’s wrongly disallowed goal against Crystal Palace is still grinding Eddie Howe’s gears two weeks on.

The Magpies face Howe’s former club Bournemouth tomorrow afternoon but the 44-year-old could not help taking one final swipe at the VAR officials who cost his side victory last time out.

Those in charge of the technology ruled Joe Willock had fouled goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the build-up to Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal — a decision referees’ body PMGOL has since admitted was incorrect.

"For me it was a clear and obvious error right from the minute they disallowed the goal," Howe said. "I only had my real-time eye on it, but I was adamant it was a goal.

"It’s hugely disappointing when you look back on it and see it was a clear push in Joe’s back and you can see his momentum is clearly affected by that, so it was an incredible decision in a negative way for us.

"Yes, we had loads of chances in the game and should’ve won the game ourselves, but that’s a moment where we’ve created pressure, scored a legitimate goal and it’s been taken away from us, so that was really cruel."

The hosts will be looking for only a second win of the season against the Cherries, having drawn four of their opening six games.

Becks pays tribute

David Beckham was among the many thousands of people queuing up to pay their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II in London today.

Her majesty is currently lying in state ahead of her funeral on Monday and former England captain Beckham, 47, was in attendance at Westminster Hall this afternoon.

Having queued for over 12 hours, Beckham said: "We all want to be here together. We all want to be here to celebrate the amazing life of our Queen.

"Something like this today is meant to be shared together."

Ecuador keep their spot

Ecuador are set to hold on to their 2022 World Cup spot after a bizarre appeal from Chile was dismissed by FIFA.

The Chilean federation had lodged an official complaint relating to Ecuador’s wide player Byron Castillo, claiming he was ineligible to play for them as he was actually Colombian.

Castillo featured in eight of Ecuador’s qualifying matches en route to Qatar, something that Chile felt was significant enough to merit their fellow South American side’s expulsion from the tournament.

However, appeal judges have dismissed the case having been sufficiently satisfied with Castillo’s documentation.

Chile intend to make one final last-ditch attempt to reverse that verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

Ecuador will feature against Qatar in the opening game of the winter tournament on November 20.

Wales in a Rush

The Football Association of Wales have unveiled iconic striker Ian Rush as their advisor and football ambassador.

Liverpool legend Rush, 60, scored 28 goals in 73 appearances for the Dragons between 1980 and 1996, placing him second in Wales’ all-time top scorer list behind Gareth Bale.

Speaking about the role, Rush said: "The upcoming FIFA World Cup is a great opportunity. 

"It provides us with a fantastic chance to promote our nation on the biggest stage of them all and I will be working hard to capitalise on this. 

"We must ensure that football is grown in every village and town across Wales by building the structures and resources required to support our clubs, schools and partners."

Kepa’s going Potty

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is relishing life under new manager Graham Potter.

The Spaniard started Potter’s first game in charge on Wednesday evening — a frustrating 1-1 home draw with FC Salzburg in the Champions League — due to regular No1 Edouard Mendy’s knee injury.

And although he was left saddened by Thomas Tuchel’s sudden Stamford Bridge departure, the prospect of a fresh start under the former Brighton boss is exciting the 27-year-old stopper.

Kepa told Chelsea’s website: "The last few days have been a little bit crazy and we are sad obviously because we achieved big things together with Thomas and we had very good times with him.

"Now there is a new start with Graham and some different ideas. He is very positive in his mind and he tries to give us this positivity.

"We want to have good presence on the pitch, take the ball and attack as much as we can, and when we lose the ball try to recover as soon as possible. 

"It’s been two or three training sessions with the new manager so it’s just the beginning but it’s been a positive beginning and a good point to start."
