Newcastle will push to sign Curtis Jones from Liverpool as a replacement for Sandro Tonali should they sell the Italian this summer, reports TEAMtalk.
Tonali was reportedly offered to Premier League leaders Arsenal on deadline day, though the player’s agent denies rumours that the Gunners could have signed the former AC Milan man on the final day of the January transfer window.
Even so, Tonali is subject to interest from a number of Premier League sides, with Manchester City and Chelsea supposedly monitoring the midfielder’s situation at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle will consider Jones
And if Newcastle do cash in on the 25-year-old, then they’ll consider a move for Reds star Jones.
Inter were credited with an interest in Jones last month, with the Italian side offering to take the Liverpool star on loan for the second half of the season.
Liverpool quickly rejected Inter’s offer but their stance may soften at the end of the season.
Magpies would face competition for Jones
If Liverpool entertain the idea of selling Jones, then Newcastle won’t be the only side in for the England international.
Jones is currently contracted to Anfield until 2027 and potential suitors may test the waters if the defending champions can’t agree a new deal with the midfielder.
Aston Villa and Tottenham have both been monitoring Jones’ situation on Merseyside.
Spurs were linked with Jones in January
Spurs had considered a move for Jones before instead pursuing Conor Gallagher, who returned to England after an 18-month spell with Atletico Madrid.
Villa, who were also linked with a move for Gallagher, could rival Newcastle and Spurs if they themselves push to bolster in the middle of the park.
The Villans are currently in the midst of an injury crisis in the middle of the park having lost both Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans to respective problems last month.
The Midlands side also re-signed Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus to ease their midfield concerns.
Jones unlikely to start vs Man City
25-year-old Jones has made 21 league appearances for Liverpool this season, though has featured from the outset just 10 times.
And the midfielder may have to settle for a spot on the bench once more when the Reds take on Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
