Manchester United are considering a move for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes as a replacement for the outgoing Casemiro, reports Spanish publication AS.
Casemiro’s contract is up in the summer and the Brazilian will depart for pastures new once the season draws to a close.
A switch to MLS side LA Galaxy for the experienced midfielder has been mooted, while the Brazil international also has Saudi Pro League suitors.
United considering Casemiro replacements
And United are weighing up their options as they consider how best to replace the 34-year-old.
Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has previously been linked with a move to United, while Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton is also another rumoured target for Michael Carrick’s side.
However, United may pursue Magpies skipper Guimaraes as they look to break the bank to bolster the midfield this summer.
Manchester side set to prioritise midfield this summer
United strengthened between the sticks and on the frontline last year, but failed to bolster in the middle of the park.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba was courted by United over the summer, though a transfer didn't materialise as the Seagulls demanded in excess of £100m for the Cameroon international.
Newcastle would demand a similar fee were they to consider cashing in on Guimaraes, who has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best all-round midfielders.
Newcastle stars linked with summer exits
Guimaraes isn’t the only player who has been linked with a St. James’ Park exit in recent weeks.
Sandro Tonali was a rumoured Arsenal target on deadline day last month, while Anthony Gordon is supposedly on United and Liverpool’s radar.
Additionally, centre-back Malick Thiaw is believed to have caught the eye of United scouts having shone following his arrival from AC Milan last year.
United and Newcastle face off at St. James’ Park on Wednesday, though the Magpies take on the Manchester giants without skipper Guimaraes due to an ankle injury.
