Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is backing the club to bring back Rasmus Hojlund so that he can "fight it out" for a place in the side with Benjamin Sesko.

United have gone from strength to strength under Michael Carrick. Champions League football is all but confirmed for next season and there's likely to be a good deal of recruitment to succeed in Europe.

There are still decisions to be made about some other players currently away from the club. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Hojlund are all currently on loans across Europe.

Barcelona have an option to buy Rashford, Sancho's contract at Old Trafford is set to be up in summer and Napoli have an obligation to buy Hojlund if they secure Champions League football - they're third and eight points above fifth place, meaning that looks extremely likely.

But Hojlund is the member of that trio that United legend Giggs would be open to seeing return.

He said on Rio Ferdinand Presents: “He’s [Carrick] got big decisions with the likes of Marcus, Hojlund, Sancho all these players.

“Maybe Hojlund, maybe. I thought he was unlucky he was just the only centre-forward at the club.

“Everyone expected him to come in and do great. I think Sesko gets more chances and scores more goals.

“But you never know, if you’ve got two young, hungry centre-forwards up front and say fight it out.

“You see at United that’s always been a strength. I say training is harder than the games, if you’ve United centre-halves at one end marking Sesko it’s going to be competitive.”

Giggs wants to see Carrick keep United job

Carrick was only brought in as interim manager until the end of the season, but the former United midfielder is doing such a good job that many feel he should be kept on permanently.

His former team-mate, Giggs, is a member of that fraternity.

He said: “I think a strong personality and just the quiet way he’s gone about it.

“The way we played against Manchester City, that’s the United way pass and move, pass and move. When you get into the ball into the dribblers you can make things happen, that’s when you can take risks.

“Man United has always been about no player being quicker than the ball, you saw that in little triangle in the City game and that was after just a few days of training.

“Let’s see what he can do with a pre-season and getting the players he wants.”
