Defending champions England face Sweden in the quarter-finals of Euro 2025 on Thursday with the Lionesses determined to stay on course for glory in Switzerland.

England suffered a 2-1 defeat to France in their opening group game of Euro 2025 but put that firmly behind them with a pair of comfortable victories over the Netherlands and Wales respectively to progress.

They take on Sweden in the last eight after the Swedes topped Group C with three wins, conceding just once in the process.

Sweden will pose a stern challenge to the Lionesses and should not be underestimated, the pair met twice in qualifying and drew both times.

Team news

England have no new injury concerns and are likely to field a similar lineup to the team which demolished Wales last time out.

Sweden may look to recall Hanna Lundkvist, the right-back missed the final group game against Germany.

The stats

The last two meetings between these two in major tournaments have produced seven goals. England scored 11 times in three group matches and have now netted 32 times in their last eight matches.

Sweden have been a tough nut to crack recently, they are unbeaten in their last 15 games, with a 1-0 loss to France their last defeat.

England have lost three of their last seven matches in all competitions.

Prediction

England are defending champions in this year’s Women’s European Championships but were humbled by France in their first game and cannot afford to underestimate Sweden in this quarter-final.

Sweden’s 4-1 win in their final group game was aided by a sending off for Germany but they have been impressive going forward and that is also an area where England excel.

Only Spain scored more than England’s 11 in the group stages and even in big games they have been involved in some ding-dong battles recently — their last eight games have all gone over 2.5 goals.

Lauren James, Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone all have two goals each and look set to play a big part in this quarter-final, while Alessia Russo is another of England's goal threats.

Sweden have plenty of talent, too, and Lina Hurtig and Arsenal’s Stina Blackstenius have both netted twice in the tournament.

In a last-eight clash that looks sure to produce plenty of entertainment, over 2.5 goals looks a solid pick.
