Manchester City vs Liverpool - 12:45 pm (FA Cup)
We start our search for action at the Etihad Stadium at lunchtime, when Man City and Liverpool collide in a glamour FA Cup quarter-final tie that has plenty of goal-scoring potential. Both of the teams’ Premier League encounters earlier this term delivered three goals, while their last six meetings in Manchester have averaged 3.66 goals per 90 minutes.
Free-scoring City have hit at least two goals in 12 of their last 15 fixtures in all competitions at the Etihad Stadium, and they will fancy their chances of punishing a Pool side that still doesn’t travel well (4 defeats in seven away matches). City have kept only two clean sheets in their last eight games however, so the chances for drama to be produced at both ends should be high.
Mallorca vs Real Madrid - 3:15 pm (Mallorca vs Real Madrid)
Real Madrid’s final flurry of games before the international break were high-octane affairs and averaged a healthy 3.90 goals per 90 minutes. Los Blancos won on each occasion, but had to work hard each time, having secured just one clean sheet during the same sequence.
Mallorca, who have scored at least once in 12 of their last 13 home matches in La Liga, have the tools to make themselves a nuisance when Real Madrid visit the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on Saturday. Los Blancos have shipped goals in seven of their last eight league fixtures, and are likely to concede again against the Islanders, and their pursuit of victory in those circumstances should make for an exciting contest.
Lausanne-Sport vs Winterthur - 5:00 pm (Super League)
Lausanne-Sport and Winterthur have already faced off twice this season and over 2.5 goals landed each time. When they last crossed paths at the Stade de la Tuilière, five goals were registered in a 3-2 win for the hosts and a similarly high-scoring skirmish could develop at the same venue on Saturday.
77% of Winterthur’s Super League fixtures in Switzerland this term have rewarded over 2.5 goals bettors, while 88% of their away games have beaten the same threshold. The division’s bottom club have already conceded 82 times in total since last summer, so expect their brittle backline to be exposed again.
VfB Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund - 5:30 pm (Bundesliga)
Dortmund’s 3-3 draw with Stuttgart in November’s reverse fixture, which featured a hattrick from Deniz Undav, was one of the best games of the season so far in the Bundesliga. It was also the third meeting in a row between the clubs where over 2.5 goals were scored and more net-shredding action could be in the works on Saturday evening.
Stuttgart’s matches in the Bundesliga have been averaging 3.40 goals this term, while Dortmund’s have been averaging 3.18, while 100% of BVB’s last five away tests in the division have also produced a minimum of three goals. Everything looks in place for those trends to continue here.
Trabzonspor vs Galatasaray - 6:00 pm (Super Lig)
Saturday’s skirmish between rivals Trabzonspor (3rd) and Galatasaray (1st) is a genuine title-race six-pointer with the teams separated by just two places and four points near the summit of the Super Lig. Trabzonspor will see this as a huge opportunity to claim a statement win and their push for victory could make for an open game.
Trabzonspor have been cutting through teams since February, hitting 3+ goals in five of their last nine Super Lig matches, so they should be able to fight fire with fire when they host the division’s most prolific team (Galatasaray – 62 goals). Expect fireworks at Papara Park.
Ajax vs FC Twente - 8:00 pm (Eredivisie)
Fourth meets fifth in Amsterdam on Saturday night when Ajax welcome FC Twente to the Johan Cruyff Arena, in what promises to be a gripping, goal-filled watch in the Eredivisie. When the teams last met in Enschede in October, Ajax escaped with a 3-2 win despite conceding a mammoth 21 shots, so Twente will be out for revenge here.
Four of the clubs’ last six encounters have seen at least four goals, so recent history is firmly on our side. In addition, Twente have scored at least once in 100% of their last 11 away games in the Eredivisie, though they’ve only managed to extract one clean sheet from 14 fixtures on the road in the league since August. All the evidence suggests goals should be on the menu in Amsterdam.
