Southampton vs Derby - 3:00 pm (Championship)
Tonda Eckert’s Southampton continued their late-season flourish with a stunning 5-1 win at playoff rivals Wrexham on Tuesday evening, just days after the Saints shocked Arsenal (2-1) in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Buoyed by their stirring back-to-back displays, Southampton will be targeting more goals and points when they play Derby on Saturday.
The Rams are unlikely to make life easy for their hosts, however. Derby gave leaders Coventry a real run for their money in their last Championship away assignment, losing a five-goal thriller there late on (2-3). That was the 11th time in County’s last 15 away games in the division where over 2.5 goals landed. Expect similar at St. May’s Stadium.
Liverpool vs Fulham - 5:30 pm (Premier League)
The race for fifth spot, and the lucrative prize of Champions League qualification that comes with it, is heating up in England’s top tier, and Fulham (9th) could close to within two points of Liverpool (5th) with a victory at Anfield on Saturday. The Cottagers’ pursuit of that result could make for an open game on Merseyside.
Six of Liverpool’s last nine Premier League matches have seen over 2.5 goals and the lacklustre Reds have conceded twice in three of their last four games in the division. Indeed, Fulham also scored twice against Pool in January’s reverse fixture (2-2) between the clubs. That was the fourth encounter in a row between the sides where at least four goals were registered, and excitement levels could be high again this weekend.
St. Pauli vs Bayern Munich - 5:30 pm (Bundesliga)
Bayern Munich coach shuffled his XI to face Freiburg last weekend to keep players fresh for the club’s Champions League date with Real Madrid, and that made the contest more evenly-matched than it might have been had Die Roten been at full strength.
The Bundesliga champions elect eventually came from two down to prevail late on against Freiburg (3-2), though the game was a genuine end-to-ender. Kompany is likely to make more sweeping changes to his usual team when Bayern travel to take on St. Pauli, and another match that ebbs and flows could develop as a consequence, with goals the likely byproduct.
Atalanta vs Juventus - 7:45 pm (Serie A)
Atalanta have provide excellent entertainment over the past two months, with 80% of their last ten fixtures in all competitions rewarding over 2.5 bettors. At their home in Bergamo, eight of La Dea’s last nine matches have also produced at least three goals, a sequence that includes a 3-0 win over Saturday’s opponents, Juventus, in the Coppa Italia.
That was the third time in four meetings between the clubs (including a summer friendly) where over 2.5 goals were scored, and we’re tipping that trend to continue. Juve have been remarkably leaky on the road of late, and have conceded 3+ goals in four of their last five away tests. Five of the Old Lady’s last six games in all competitions have featured over 2.5 goals overall, so this one can be backed with plenty of confidence.
Heracles vs Ajax - 8:00 pm (Eredivisie)
Heracles’ 4-1 reverse at Heerenveen kept them rooted to the foot of the Eredivisie and the league’s worst outfit have now conceded an eye-watering 74 goals in 29 fixtures since August. With their porous defence the driving force, Heracles’ Eredivisie fixtures have been averaging 3.72 goals this term and those figures could be topped up on Saturday evening.
Ajax continue to blow hot and cold in terms of results, though they remain a reliable pick for over 2.5 goals accas, especially when the Amsterdam giants are on their travels. Nine of their last 12 Eredivisie away games have seen at least three goals, with the same contests averaging a healthy 3.58 goals overall. Their trip to play Heracles should yield similar action.
