  • The pair have already met four times this season in the Premier League and Carabao Cup

  • Recommended bet: Manchester City to win

Newcastle United host Manchester City in arguably the tie of the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday evening.

The all-Premier League showdown sees two familiar foes go head-to-head again after their recent meetings in both the league and Carabao Cup.

Both were in Premier League action in midweek with Newcastle sealing an impressive 2-1 home win over Man Utd, while City's title bid suffered a major setback as they drew 2-2 at home against struggling Nottingham Forest.

Team news

Jacob Ramsey is suspended following his controversial red card against United and Eddie Howe is also set to be without injured quartet Bruno Guimaraes, Emil Krafth, Lewis Miley and Fabian Schar.

Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali and Nick Woltemade are all rated as doubtful.

The Magpies boss is likely to freshen up his side somewhat for the cup tie with the likes of Sven Botman, Joe Willock and William Osula, who scored the late winner on Wednesday, among those pushing for starts.

City must do without the sidelined Max Alleyne, Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic, while Nico O'Reilly will be assessed.

Pep Guardiola is also likely to ring the changes and could recall Nathan Ake, Jeremy Doku, Omar Marmoush and Tijjani Reijnders to his starting line-up.

The stats

This is the fifth meeting between the sides this season with City winning home and away in the EFL Cup semi-final and also at home in the league, while Newcastle triumphed in the St James' Park league clash in November.

There were goals at both ends in three of those games.

The Magpies' victory at home in the league is their only success against City in the last eight meetings between the sides.

City hammered Exeter City 10-1 in the third round and then beat Salford City 2-0 in the previous round.

Newcastle have progressed to the fifth round courtesy of a victory over Bournemouth on penalties in the third round, after the tie had finished 3-3, and a 3-1 win at Aston Villa in the fourth round.

Prediction

These two sides know each other well and it was only a fortnight ago when they met in the league at the Etihad, a game City won 2-1.

Guardiola's side also came out on top home and away in the EFL Cup semi-final, winning the first leg at St James' Park 2-0 before sealing their place in the final with a 3-1 Etihad success.

Newcastle will, though, take confidence from their 2-1 win at home in the league in November, while the manner of their win over United in midweek, when they battled for the whole of the second half with 10 men before coming out on top late on, should also boost them going into the tie.

City, in contrast, could be down after a damaging 2-2 home draw with Forest means it is now advantage Arsenal in the title race.

However, the visitors have an abundance of quality to bounce back and they can navigate what should be a keenly contested tie to book a quarter-final place.
