Patrick Reed will be hoping for a strong display at this week's BMW PGA Championship

All eyes will be on the DP World Tour's flagship event at Wentworth this week, with a star-studded field competing for the BMW PGA Championship.

With crucial Race to Dubai and Ryder Cup points on offer, along with a winner's cheque in excess of £1 million, it promises to be another enthralling battle in Virginia Water, Surrey.

Rory McIlroy has been installed as the 9/1 favourite with LiveScore Bet to claim the spoils for the second time, having done so in 2014, while last week's record-breaking Irish Open champion Shane Lowry is priced at 20/1.

Reed hard to oppose at Wentworth

There are plenty in with chances in this stacked field but one player who stands out above them all is Patrick Reed, who has built up some strong form with a tied-11th finish at the European Masters followed by a share of second place at the Irish Open.

A two-time winner on the DP World Tour this season, the American has come close to winning the BMW PGA Championship on all four of his previous appearances, with a fourth-placed effort in 2019 followed by a third in 2020, fifth in 2022 and another third last year.

Wentworth is a course that demands accuracy on approach and that is an area Reed has thrived in this year, as he ranks second in strokes gained approach and 13th in greens in regulation.

The ability to get up and down from difficult situations is also imperative around this layout and the world number 28 can conjure some magic when required, evidenced by the fact that he is in the top five for strokes gained around the green and scrambling.

Wallace to press Ryder Cup claims

Qualifying for the 2027 European Ryder Cup team began at last month's British Masters and one player desperate to make his debut in the biennial men's golf competition against the USA is Matt Wallace.

Wallace has made no secret of his desire to represent Europe and he will be eager to put some early points on the board with a strong performance at the BMW PGA Championship.

The Englishman arrives in Surrey in good form, having finished no worse than tied 15th in his last five starts, and he has come close to winning this season with two runner-up efforts.

Wallace has been consistent in all areas of his game this term, ranking eighth in strokes gained total, and he can put in a bold showing.

Extra holes required

Given the quality fields that turn up for the BMW PGA Championship every year, it is perhaps no surprise to see that the last two editions have been decided by a play-off.

Billy Horschel overcame Thriston Lawrence and McIlroy in 2024 before Alex Noren outlasted Adrien Saddier last year, those two winners both lifting the trophy for the second time.

With the three runnings from 2021 to 2023 all being won by a single shot, this tournament has a history of being decided by fine margins and there could be the need for extra holes on Sunday.
