Borussia Monchengladbach vs Heidenheim (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Gladbach were involved in a pulsating Rhein derby against FC Koln just before the international break in a feisty clash that featured six goals (3-3) and ten cards. The point Die Fohlen eventually earned kept them five points clear of the relegation zone however, and they have lost only once in four Bundesliga assignments overall.
Bottom-club Heidenheim meanwhile, were involved in a 3-3 thriller of their own when they held Bayer Leverkusen to a surprise draw when last seen. Two goals from substitute Marvin Pieringer made the difference there and that was the third time in five matches where Heidenheim notched at least twice. The relegation favourites have shown spirit of late, but having already lost 11 of their 13 away games since August, the odds look stacked against them again.
Score prediction: Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2 Heidenheim
Bayer Leverkusen vs Wolfsburg (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Bayer Leverkusen’s resources were stretched before the international break as Die Werkself struggled to manage domestic and continental responsibilities. Bayer failed to win eight of their nine games in all competitions in the run-up to the break, a run that dented their top-four Bundesliga hopes and ended their Champions League adventure.
However, Kasper Hjulmand’s charges could reignite their campaign on Saturday. Visiting Wolfsburg turned to the experience of Dieter Hecking last month, but lost a relegation six-pointer to Werder Bremen (0-1) in their returning coach’s first home game. Die Wolfe lost defender Moritz Jenz to a red card in that loss, and with skipper Maximilian Arnold a major doubt and Lovro Majer suspended, Wolfsburg look ill-equipped to match Leverkusen’s class.
Score prediction: Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 Wolfsburg
Freiburg vs Bayern Munich (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Freiburg enjoyed a productive week in the lead-up to the international pause with back-to-back wins over Genk (5-1) in the Europa League and St. Pauli (2-1) in the Bundesliga, keeping them on track on two fronts. Freiburg have lost just once in their last 18 home games in all competitions, though that record will be given a thorough examination on Saturday.
Harry Kane is unlikely to spearhead the Bayern Munich attack in Freiburg, having picked up a minor injury while training with England, so expect the league leaders to field a reshuffled frontline at the Europa-Park Stadion. Bayern put six goals past Freiburg (6-2) in November, with Michael Olise scoring two and creating three more on that occasion. With the Frenchman influential, Bayern should be in control again in Saturday’s rematch.
Score prediction: Freiburg 1-3 Bayern Munich
Hamburg vs Augsburg (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Hamburg blew a big opportunity to allay any remaining relegation fears before the international break when they threw away a two-goal lead at Dortmund. Merlin Polzin’s side had a two-goal buffer with just 15 minutes remaining at Signal Iduna Park, but still managed to capitulate, and Hamburg have now won just once in their last six attempts in the Bundesliga.
Augsburg meanwhile, suffered one of their heaviest defeats of the campaign before the break when they turned over 5-2 at home by Stuttgart. Augsburg actually matched their visitors for shots (13-13) and ran them close for shots on target (7-8), but were still well beaten. Augsburg are back on the road this weekend, but having lost seven of their last nine away assignments, they can’t be backed with any confidence.
Score prediction: Hamburg 2-1 Augsburg
Hoffenheim vs Mainz (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Hoffenheim were battered and bruised by a rampant RB Leipzig outfit before the international break in a 5-0 reverse that was Die Kraichgauer’s heaviest loss of the season by a distance. That defeat also extended a run of poor form for Christian Ilzer’s side, whose top four hopes have been hit by a run of just two wins in seven Bundesliga fixtures.
In contrast, Mainz continue to go from strength to strength under Urs Fischer. Since the Swiss coach’s appointment in December, Mainz have lost just twice in 18 games in all competitions and they scored an excellent 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in their last test. The increasingly robust Nullfünfer should be able to leave Hoffenheim with at least a point.
Score prediction: Hoffenheim 1-1 Mainz
Werder Bremen vs RB Leipzig (Saturday, 2:30 pm)
Werder Bremen’s dogged 1-0 win at Werder Bremen before the break was a hugely significant victory, moving the club four points clear of the drop zone. Werder have won three of their last four games overall, with February hire Daniel Thioune enjoying his best spell since arriving. However, two of those wins were secured against the division’s bottom two (Wolfsburg and Heidenheim).
RB Leipzig should provide a much stiffer test on Saturday. Die Roten Bullen dazzled in a 5-0 win over Hoffenheim on March 20th, and have lost only two of their last ten league matches overall. Leipzig, who have enviable quality in their frontline, had 22 shots and 13 attempts on target when they beat Werder (2-0) in November and their prowess in the final third could earn them a similar result here.
Score prediction: Werder Bremen 1-2 RB Leipzig
VfB Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 5:30 pm)
Third meets second at the MHPArena when Stuttgart host Borussia Dortmund in Saturday evening’s televised offering. This is a venue Dortmund have toiled at in recent campaigns. They haven’t won there since 2022 and are currently winless in four successive trips to Stuttgart, losing each of the last three, including last season’s 5-1 mauling.
Stuttgart’s Deniz Undav scored twice in that five-goal showcase and the same player notched a hattrick when Die Schwaben drew 3-3 at Dortmund in November. Undav has been in sensational form this term (18 goals in 19 Bundesliga starts) and the attacker scored for Germany against Ghana during the international break. With Undav leading the charge, Stuttgart could prevail in this one.
Score prediction: VfB Stuttgart 3-2 Borussia Dortmund
Union Berlin vs St. Pauli (Sunday, 2:30 pm)
Union Berlin remain locked in midtable limbo and their results since the turn of the year have been uninspiring at best. Their 4-0 loss at Bayern Munich before the international break didn’t raise eyebrows, however, the Iron Ones have now failed to win ten of their 12 Bundesliga fixtures since January 1st.
After a bountiful February, St. Pauli’s pursuit of survival slowed in March, with the side claiming just one point from the nine on offer last month. They were unfortunate to lose to Freiburg (1-2) in their last runout however, after keeper Nikola Vasilj made a crucial error. If they can resist pressing the self-destruct button again, St. Pauli might be able to hang on to a point against an unmotivated Union side on Sunday.
Score prediction: Union Berlin 1-1 St. Pauli
Eintracht Frankfurt vs FC Koln (Sunday, 4:30 pm)
Spanish coach Albert Riera’s mixed start to life with Eintracht Frankfurt continued just before the international pause when Die Adler were beaten by a more clinical Mainz outfit (1-2). Frankfurt have yet to win an away game under Riera, though they have pocketed nine points from nine since his appointment.
FC Koln sacked their head coach, Lukas Kwasniok, last week, leaving René Wagner to take temporary charge on Sunday. Wagner was Kwasniok’s number two however, so it remains to be seen if he can reinvigorate a Koln squad that has won only twice in 18 attempts since November. Instead, Frankfurt seem to hold all the aces here and should collect three points.
Score prediction: Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 FC Koln
