Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos Preview, Predictions, and How to Watch

During the four o'clock hour, we’ve got a potential Super Bowl preview when the 9-3-1 Green Bay Packers face the 11-2 AFC-leading Denver Broncos. The Packers are coming off their biggest win of the season, beating the Chicago Bears to reclaim first place in the NFC North. Meanwhile, the Broncos keep defeating teams after topping the Las Vegas Raiders for their 10th win in a row.
Following back-to-back losses to the Carolina Panthers and the Philadelphia Eagles, the Packers have won four straight games, including three divisional matchups. Despite the recent success, Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur didn't want to spend any time celebrating the victory over Chicago.
“I mean, it is what it is,” he said during the Week 14 postgame press conference. “Like, you’ve just got to move on to the next game, and we’ve got a great test in front of us going to Denver… What are they 11-2 now or whatever it is? So, we’ve got a great challenge in front of us, and I don't think you can focus on anything other than that.”
It seems like, after a lot of trial and error, the Packers have found the right offensive line combination to keep Jordan Love upright and generate more success on the ground. Still, this will be the group's toughest test of the season, going against a Broncos defense that leads the league in sacks (55).
“The more time those guys are going out there, getting those reps together - whether it's in game or in practice - I think it's beneficial. And they got a great test in front of them. So, we need them to be at their best. No doubt about it,” LaFleur said on Thursday. “Their edges and just the style of play that they bring, in terms of just all the different pressures. Zach (Allen) is a guy that can win quickly inside. I think he's got over 50-some odd pressures on the season, 51 or something like that. So, to get that inside-outside combination is a big-time challenge because somebody's getting a one-on-one somewhere.”
Obviously, the Broncos' offense is focused on second-year quarterback Bo Nix, who has 19 passing TDs and four touchdowns on the ground. However, Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley explained that the team around Nix has led to his success.
“What he's shown this year - in some big, key moments - is using his legs. He's made some huge plays at the end of the game,” said Hafley. “Just a really good, young quarterback who's got a really bright future. And what they've done around him. They’ve got a really good offensive line. They've got good backs… Wideouts are good. The tight ends. I mean, when Engram’s out there, it's like having another wide receiver on the field. They've just built a really good offense around him, and I think they'll just keep getting better.”
Though they don't play in the same conference as Green Bay, even the Broncos' ears perked up when the news broke that the Packers had made a trade for defensive end Micah Parsons.
“When a trade happens, you're focused on whatever you're doing,” explained Denver coach Sean Payton. “Two NFC teams make a trade, and - I mean - it's news. Now, as a player, he's extremely explosive. He's got unique bend and balance for someone at that position. He's a handful. I mean, he's a rare type [of] player.”
Denver's 11-2 record can partially be attributed to the team's success at home, where they're 6-0 this season. In fact, they're the only team in the league with an undefeated home record through the first 14 weeks of the campaign.
“We're counting on our crowd this week. Not just at the line of scrimmage, but while they're in the huddle,” Payton said. “I go back to a few weeks ago, and that communication that exists from the opponent when they're in the huddle. You'd be surprised when some teams’ stadiums have it figured out, that the quarterback to the group in the huddle - it all gets blurry - you have problems. And I thought our last home game with Kansas City was significant. I'm counting on it being even a higher level.”
This will be one of just two cross-conference games between teams with winning records this week. Considering the other AFC vs. NFC game will be the Indianapolis Colts vs. the Seattle Seahawks, a lot of people will be tuning into this Packers-Broncos matchup.
“I think the atmosphere is going to be electric. I think our fans are going to be extremely motivated and very hostile. [It’s] probably going to be similar to the Chiefs game a few weeks ago,” said Denver quarterback Bo Nix. “This will be what seems to be a playoff game. So, this will be an intense game on the field. It'll be an intense environment… I feel good after what happened [in] our last home game. So, we're going to be ready to go on our side, and I know they're going to come in with a really good plan. I know it's going to be a really good football game.”
Prediction for Green Bay Packers (-2) @ Denver Broncos
The Broncos are 11-2, have won ten straight games, and are undefeated at home. Yet, the Green Bay Packers are favored to win this game, which is mind-boggling. Everybody should be expecting the Broncos to cover the spread because this is a coin flip game. In all likelihood, bettors are picking the Packers because they have the better quarterback, but Denver has a top-three defense in the NFL. Though Green Bay's offensive line has found some consistency, nobody has been able to stop Denver's pass rush, which averages almost 4.5 sacks per game. I don't expect that to be any different this weekend.
Prediction: Broncos 21 - 20 Packers
