The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams that will send two-time All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to LA in exchange for four draft picks, according to sources that spoke to ESPN. KC will receive the 29th overall pick in this year's draft, a sixth- and a seventh-rounder in the 2026 Draft, and a third-round pick in next year's draft for McDuffie.

McDuffie is expected to sign a long-term contract with the Rams once the trade is completed. He is currently set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

McDuffie started in all 13 games he played in this year, recording 63 total tackles, 45 solo tackles, two tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one interception, and seven pass deflections. After suffering a knee injury in Week 14, he was placed on the injured reserve on December 24th, 2025, ending his season.

Trent McDuffie was taken by the Chiefs with the 22nd pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. In 2023, he was named a First-Team All-Pro. The following year, he earned Second-Team All-Pro honors.

The Rams are all in next year

LA is clearly done playing around. The franchise knows that they do not have a lot of time left with Matthew Stafford as their starting quarterback, and they need to capitalize on that by winning a Super Bowl before the start of the 2028-29 season.

It's unfair to call a campaign that ends in an NFC Championship Game appearance a failure, but that's probably how members of the Rams organization viewed this year. They had the best player in football leading their team, yet they still couldn't make it to the Super Bowl. With Matthew Stafford returning for one or - at the most - two more years, they need to wind up with a Lombardi Trophy if they want to call this period in the franchise's history a success.

It's fair to say that the Rams' defense let them down in the NFC Championship Game. The offense managed to put up 27 points against a Seattle defense that only gave up 16.9 points per game during the regular season and the playoffs. The Offense did its job in the NFCCG. Unfortunately, the defense failed to live up to expectations, giving up 321 passing yards and three touchdowns while not recording a single interception. In their final two games against the Seahawks, LA's defense allowed Sam Darnold to record a 106.6 passer rating. This trade shows that the team knows its defense was a problem against Seattle, and the Rams are hoping that adding a former All-Pro corner can yield better results.

What's most impressive about this trade is that LA still has a top-ten draft pick. Hell, they still have three picks in the first three rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft! They just added an elite defensive player, while still having the flexibility to use a high-value draft pick to beef up their roster elsewhere. This was a fantastic move by the Rams who didn't have to mortgage away their future to pull off this deal.

The Chiefs are hoping to retool and not rebuild.

In the National Football League, the best teams every year are the ones that have elite quarterbacks. With Patrick Mahomes, who is a top-five quarterback at worst, Kansas City knows that it has to do everything it can to build a championship roster. If Patrick Mahomes were to never win a Super Bowl again, it would be viewed as one of the great organizational failures in NFL history. Therefore, the Chiefs aren't allowed to rebuild. They cannot have a down year where they end up with a top-three draft pick. They have to restructure their roster each season and ensure that they put together a championship-caliber team year after year.

With the way Kansas City is currently structured, nailing the draft gives them the most realistic path forward to a championship. KC is still $14 million over the cap, meaning they can't make splashy moves in free agency by giving out big contracts. Instead, the Chiefs have to invest in rookies and hope that those players can be immediate difference makers who don't carry a lofty price tag.

Once this trade is finalized, Kansas City will have nine picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, including two first-rounders. One of those picks will likely be used on a running back, since the Chiefs were 25th in rushing last season (106.6 yards per game). That will give the offense more balance and take some pressure off of Patrick Mahomes, who is coming recovering from a torn ACL. The other pick can be used on another position, whether it be tight end, defensive line, linebacker, or something else. KC has some major holes on the roster that they'll need to fill via the draft. The best way to do that is by having the highest number of picks immaginable.
