February has come and gone, which means that March Madness will begin later this month. Plus, the playoff races are heating up in the NBA and the NHL. Hell, we are even gearing up for the NFL Draft now that the 2026 Scouting Combine has concluded. With everything that is going on, we have identified the biggest sporting events taking place each day this week in North America.
Monday, March 2nd
College Basketball
#4 Iowa State vs. #2 Arizona at 9:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
The second game of the Big Monday doubleheader will be a Big 12 clash between two of the best teams in the country when the 24-5 Iowa State Cyclones go on the road to face the 27-2 Arizona Wildcats in their only regular-season matchup this year. Iowa State has struggled recently, going 3-3 after starting the campaign 21-2. However, it's worth noting that they have notched wins over #14 Kansas and #5 Houston during that stretch. On the other hand, Arizona is looking for its fourth straight victory over a top-25 opponent. With these two ranked in the top four in the Big 12 standings, this game will undoubtedly affect who wins the regular-season conference title.
One question that will be answered: Will Arizona's 12th-ranked offense (87.1 points per game) overwhelm Iowa State's 17th-ranked defense (65.5 points per game allowed)?
Tuesday, March 3rd
NHL
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Minnesota Wild at 9:30 p.m. EDT on TNT/truTV/HBO Max.
Even on what some might consider a slow day in American sports, we're still going to be treated to a potential Stanley Cup Finals preview when the Lightning (the number-two seed in the East) face the Wild (the number-three seed in the West). These squads are looking for their first marquee win since returning from the Winter Olympic break after they both went 1-2 last week. Minnesota needs a victory if it wants to catch the Colorado Avalanche in the race for first place in the Central Division. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has to worry about holding on to first place in the Atlantic Division with the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens hot on its tail.
One question that will be answered: Will the Wild's Kirill Kaprizov, the NHL's fifth-ranked scorer (34 goals), add to his total against the Lightning's Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is the league's second-best goalie with a .917 save percentage?
Wednesday, March 4th
NBA
Oklahoma City Thunder vs. New York Knicks at 7:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
Two teams with championship aspirations meet in the world's most famous arena for a potential preview of the 2026 NBA Finals. Now that reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has returned to the lineup, the Thunder are 2-0 in their last two outings and continue to look like the team to beat out West. As for the Knickerbockers, they’re hoping to win their second straight game against an elite Western Conference team, following the 114-89 shellacking they gave the Spurs on Sunday. With the defending champs making a trip to the Big Apple and the Knicks going all in with hopes of winning the East, all eyes will be on Madison Square Garden this Wednesday.
One question that will be answered: Can Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is averaging a league-leading 33 points per game since All-Star Weekend, put up gaudy numbers against a Knicks squad that has the second-best defense in the NBA since coming back from the break (104.5 points per game allowed)?
Thursday, March 5th
NHL
Buffalo Sabres vs. Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
This contest could have huge implications on playoff seeding as the Sabres and Penguins square off for the final time during the 2025-26 regular season. Both teams have been red hot since 2026 began. Pittsburgh is third in the league in points percentage (.762) while Buffalo is fifth in the NHL during that stretch (.714). Simultaneously, these squads sit in second place in their respective divisions, so a win will do wonders for either the Sabres' or the Penguins' chances of securing a divisional title. On top of that, this could actually end up being a potential matchup at some point during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
One question that will be answered: Considering the Penguins and Sabres rank first and second, respectively, in save percentage since January 1st (.912 and .911), will these teams combine for at least three goals scored?
College Basketball
#3 Michigan vs. Iowa at 8:00 p.m. EDT on Peacock.
In what could be one of the most important games of the Hawkeyes' 2025-26 season, Iowa plays host to the Michigan Wolverines in hopes of securing its second marquee win of the campaign. Right now, the Hawkeyes are a fringe team that could be left out of the NCAA Tournament if they're unable to make a splash in the Big Ten Conference Championship Tournament. But they could change their postseason outlook if they can upset the third-ranked Wolverines at home. With only one win against a top-25 team this season (a 57-52 victory over #12 Nebraska), Iowa can lock up an NCAA Tournament spot by beating Michigan.
One question that will be answered: Will the Hawkeyes' 11th-ranked defense (65 points per game allowed) be good enough to contain the Wolverines and their eighth-ranked offense (89 points per game)?
NBA
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets at 10:00 p.m. EDT on Amazon Prime.
The Lakers and Nuggets meet for just the second time this season in a matchup that will have an immediate impact on the Western Conference Playoff standings. Currently, Denver sits in the five-seed while LA is a half-game behind them as the six-seed. Also, this will be the first time this season that we will see Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić going head-to-head on the court. When you realize Luka leads the league in scoring while Jokić is sixth in that category, this has the makings of an all-time showdown between two of the best offensive players in NBA history.
One question that will be answered: Who will finish the game with more combined points, rebounds, and assists: Luka Dončić or Nikola Jokić?
Friday, March 6th
NBA
Los Angeles Clippers vs. San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN
Though there isn't a ton of exciting sports action on Friday evening, we'll still get to see a contest between San Antonio and Los Angeles that could change the landscape of the Western Conference Playoffs. The second-seeded Spurs will be at home against the Clippers, who are only 28-31 and need to keep piling up victories if they want to secure a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament. As of this writing, LA is the ninth-seed in their conference and has only a half-game advantage over the Portland Trail Blazers for the tenth spot in the West. To avoid an even more challenging path to the NBA Finals, the Clippers could really benefit from a win over San Antonio, which has the league's best record since February 1st (11-1).
One question that will be answered: Will Kawhi Leonard (fifth in points per game since Feb 1st, 28.7) be able to keep up his recent play and lead the Clippers to a victory over a Spurs group that is seventh in defense since the NBA All-Star Break (106.5 points per game allowed)?
Saturday, March 7th
NHL
Washington Capitals vs. Boston Bruins at 12:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
Two teams vying for the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference will meet this weekend when the Capitals travel north to take on the Bruins. This game will go a long way in determining what teams qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since Boston is currently slotted as the last wild card team in the East with 71 points on the season. However, the Caps are right on their tails with 69 points on the campaign. While most matchups in the NHL are worth two points in the standings, this one will be worth double that because Washington and Boston are in direct competition with one another for a playoff spot. One team will do wonders for its postseason hopes this Saturday.
One question that will be answered: Can the Capitals, who have the 27th-ranked power play since February 1st (9.5%), heat up against a Bruins team that has the third-worst penalty kill in the NHL over that stretch (61.5%)?
College Basketball
#18 North Carolina vs. #1 Duke at 6:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
The most storied rivalry in the history of college basketball takes centerstage on Saturday when the top-ranked Blue Devils welcome the #18 Tar Heels to Cameron Indoor Stadium. When these teams last got together, UNC senior guard Seth Trimble hit a game-winning three-pointer to down the Blue Devils, 71-68. This time around, things will be even more intense since Duke is the number-one team in the land and the Tar Heels are in the middle of a three-game winning streak. Though both of these squads are a shoo-in to make the NCAA Tournament, there will be no love lost when Duke and UNC face off this weekend, especially after the Blue Devils' Jon Scheyer said a member of his staff was injured while Tar Heels fans were storming the court after that February 7th loss.
One question that will be answered: Since the last nine matchups between these schools have been decided by an average of 7.2 points per game, will this contest come down to who has the final possession?
#16 Texas Tech vs. #19 BYU at 10:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
AJ Dybantsa, the potential number-one pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and the BYU Cougars close out the regular-season with a home game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Just when it looked like Texas Tech's fantastic season had taken a turn following the injury of leading scorer and rebounder JT Toppin, the Red Raiders pulled off a major upset by defeating the Iowa State Cyclones and ending their 15-game home winning streak. As for the Cougars, they desperately need to get back into the win column before the Big 12 Conference Tournament begins, since they're currently in the middle of a two-game slide.
One question that will be answered: After a relatively underwhelming performance against Colorado and a 13-point outing against Texas Tech the first time these teams met, can AJ Dybantsa go for at least 25 this Saturday?
Sunday, March 8th
NBA
Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers at 1:00 p.m. EDT on ABC.
Our busiest day of North American sports action begins with an Eastern Conference battle between the Celtics and the Cavs in Cleveland. With Jayson Tatum possibly returning to Boston's lineup this week, this could be the first time we will get to see the Celtics at full strength against a dangerous opponent. Meanwhile, the hand injury that James Harden has been dealing with didn't seem to impact his play all that much after he lit up the Brooklyn Nets for 22 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists yesterday. More importantly, the Celtics have a three-game lead in the Eastern Conference Playoff race over the Cavaliers, so this matchup will surely affect seeding for the 2026 NBA postseason.
One question that will be answered: How will Jayson Tatum fare against the first championship-caliber team he has played since rupturing his Achilles tendon last May?
New York Knicks vs. Los Angeles Lakers at 3:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
The NBA excitement doesn't stop there. After Celtics-Cavaliers, the Knicks will be heading West for their second and final matchup of the regular-season against the Lakers. Despite LA holding Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson to 23 combined points the first time these squads got together, the Knicks still came out on top thanks to a 23-point outing by Landry Shamet, who went six for ten from beyond the arc. Considering both New York and Los Angeles aren't exactly where everybody expected them to be in the regular-season standings (third in the East and sixth in the West, respectively), a win will be incredibly helpful for either one of these teams.
One question that will be answered: Which dynamic duo will lead their franchise to victory: Luka Dončić and LeBron James or Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns?
Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs at 8:00 p.m. EDT on NBA/Peacock.
The final marquee NBA game of the week pits the West’s second-seeded Spurs against the third-seeded Rockets. As things stand, the Spurs lead the regular-season series 2-1. Houston's Kevin Durant has seemingly turned back the clock, averaging 29.3 points per game since coming back from the All-Star Break, which is good for seventh in the league. However, the Spurs have the highest winning percentage in the NBA since the beginning of February (.917) while being tied for seventh in the league in team defensive rating since the All-Star Game (108.4). In what could be their final meeting before the playoffs, all bets are off between San Antonio and Houston.
One question that will be answered: Will Kevin Durant or Victor Wembanyama shine through in a matchup between two of the most uniquely-skilled players in NBA history?
NHL
Minnesota Wild vs. Colorado Avalanche at 2:00 p.m. EDT on TNT/truTV/HBO Max.
If professional basketball doesn't tickle your fancy, then there will be a pair of fascinating NHL games on Sunday as well. We'll start in the Western Conference with a matchup between two of the best teams in the Central Division. The Wild is looking to narrow the gap between itself and the Avalanche, who are ahead in the divisional standings by seven points. With Colorado on track to win the Presidents' Cup Trophy and Minnesota not far behind, this contest will have a ripple effect throughout the NHL.
One question that will be answered: Will the Wild's goaltenders, who are tied for 11th in save percentage since the regular season resumed (.907), continue to play well, or will the Avalanche's offense get back on track after only averaging three goals per game since the Winter Olympics ended (tied for 11th in the NHL)?
Edmonton Oilers vs. Vegas Golden Knights at 9:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
Another pair of Stanley Cup hopefuls close out our Sunday slate of NHL games when the Oilers cross the border to go against the Golden Knights for just the second time this season. When these squads last got together, Edmonton was able to fend off a Vegas comeback and held on for a 4-3 victory. However, that game was played before Christmas, and a lot has changed since then. The most important aspect of this contest is that the Golden Knights are only four points ahead of the Oilers for first place in their division, so this matchup and the other two scheduled over the next few weeks will probably determine who wins the Pacific.
One question that will be answered: With Edmonton ranking 28th in save percentage and Vegas ranking 32nd in that category since February 25, will these squads combine for at least eight goals this time around?
College Basketball
#13 Michigan State vs. #3 Michigan at 5:30 p.m. EDT on CBS.
If you aren't interested in professional sports and only watch to watch college athletes, then you're in luck because our final must-watch game of the week will be a heavyweight fight between the Spartans and the Wolverines to close out the Big Ten regular-season. Even though sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr. had a career-high 31 points for Michigan State when these teams first met, it wasn't enough since Michigan held on for an 83-71 road win. The Spartans will be hoping to get revenge for that loss as they play their in-state rivals in their last regular-season game of the 2025-26 campaign.
One question that will be answered: Will Jeremy Fears Jr. and Yaxel Lendeborg once again explode for at least 41 combined points, or will this be a defensive slugfest?
