Mikel Arteta has revealed that he is aiming to build a team capable of winning the Premier League after his side faltered at the back end of last season.

The Gunners finished second behind Manchester City, despite sitting at the top of the table for over 90% of the campaign.

But the Spanish head coach has remained in good spirits over the summer and believes he can now build a team of champions after successfully refreshing his squad over the last year.

He said: "We already made a refresh of the squad. We're now together with owners to build a winning team that could be sustainable for the long term.

"We need important players and we'll attack the market to sign those who we need."

One player who has been heavily linked with a move to North London is West Ham captain Declan Rice.

Arsenal have already seen two bids rejected but are still pushing for the England international.

However, Arteta has refused to comment on the deal.

He said: "Sorry but I can’t speak about players who’re not at the club. I prefer not to comment."

Here to stay

Pep Guardiola's former assistant has been linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested.

It marks how far the 41-year-old has come in his short time as a manager who was close to the sack at Arsenal two seasons ago.

Arteta dismissed the possibility of taking charge of PSG, stating that his aim is to carry on with Arsenal and win the title.

He said: "I can only say that I'm happy at Arsenal. I feel loved and also appreciated by the owners. I've lot of things to do for this club.

"We know the difficulty [of winning the Premier League]. It is the best league in the world and next season is going to be the most difficult season in the history of the competition.

"We all like to be praised and identify with what we do. Above all, I want the Gunners' fans to have fun and play every ball with us, to feel like one more in the goal of winning.

"To win the Premier League you must be the best. That is why we have to strengthen [this summer]."
