Julian Nagelsmann has been announced as Germany's new head coach on a short-term deal through to the end of Euro 2024.

The 36-year-old replaces Hansi Flick, who was sacked earlier this month after a run of five games without a win.

Nagelsmann was out of work after leaving Bayern Munich last March and will lead his new side into a home European Championship next summer.

He said: "We have a European Championship in our own country. That's something special — something that happens every few decades.

"I have a great desire to take on this challenge. We will be a close-knit group next year."

Rudi Voller, Germany's sporting director who stood in as interim manager for the 2-1 victory over France 10 days ago, revealed Nagelsmann was the No1 choice for the job.

He said: "Julian Nagelsmann was our preferred candidate as national coach when the search began.

"He is not only an absolute football expert but has already proven in all his positions — at a very young age for a head coach — that he can motivate and inspire a team and the entire environment.

"He will play a crucial role in ensuring that we will all experience a great European Championship in our own country in the summer."

Having automatically qualified for Euro 2024 as hosts, Germany will travel to take on USA and Mexico in the October international break.

They are then due to play Austria in Vienna in November as Nagelsmann aims to quickly get to grips with the role.
