James Ward-Prowse enjoyed a memorable debut for West Ham

James Ward-Prowse started his West Ham career in style with two assists on his debut in the 3-1 win over Chelsea last Sunday.

His first-half corner was headed home by Nayef Aguerd, before he provided the pass for Michail Antonio to break free and score the Hammers' second after the break.

Ahead of the Irons' trip to Brighton this evening, we take a look at what Ward-Prowse will offer David Moyes' side over the coming campaign.

Extra creativity

Ward-Prowse has already showcased his world-class creative ability from set-pieces.

Only five Premier League teams had a higher set-piece xG than West Ham last season (13.34) and that record could improve in 2023-24, with Ward-Prowse on corners and free-kicks.

The England international was also key in helping his side retain possession against Chelsea, ranking second in the team for completed passes (21), with a squad-leading 91.3% accuracy.

With Declan Rice gone, Ward-Prowse will be the man Moyes turns to for control in midfield — as well as the added element of set-piece threat.

Difference maker

Moyes was impressed by Ward-Prowse's first appearance at the London Stadium and offered some appreciative words to the midfielder after Sunday's match.

He said: "James Ward-Prowse played so well and that's what we want. We want midfielders who look to make assists and score.

"We've got him in now and he's already made a difference with his set-piece quality today.

"I'm really pleased for him. He has settled in well and he looks a really good lad for our dressing room."

England prospects

Ward-Prowse's switch to West Ham looks like a move that could boost his chances of making the England squad for next summer's Euros.

He enjoyed another strong campaign for Southampton in 2022-23, scoring nine goals and providing four assists.

But given Saints' struggles and eventual relegation, Ward-Prowse was perhaps overshadowed by other midfielders in the division.

If he continues to excel with West Ham, then more England opportunities might follow and Gareth Southgate may begin to pay closer attention to the 11-cap international.

Good feelings

There is a feel-good factor around Ward-Prowse's signing and it is already looking like money well spent by the Hammers.

After the Chelsea game, he said: "It has been an incredible week and I can't speak any more highly of the club and the player care team who have done a fantastic job.

"Everyone has looked after me, Ingsy [Danny Ings] has shown me the ropes and how it goes and it's just a fantastic environment to be in and I'm absolutely honoured to be here.

"It's a fantastic group of lads and the good feelings in training are coming through to the matchday as well."

Looking ahead

Ward-Prowse and West Ham will now turn their attention to another tough test, as they travel to the Amex Stadium to face red-hot Brighton.

The former Saints skipper will be aiming to add to his assist tally — and with Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne injured, the top assister title could be up for grabs this season.

Whatever the outcome in today's game, no team in the Premier League will be looking forward to facing West Ham with Ward-Prowse's dead-ball proficiency.
