Saturday Racing Tips – 26th September 2026: Newmarket & Haydock

This Saturday's racing takes us to Newmarket for the finale to the Cambridgeshire Meeting and to Haydock for Oktoberfest.

13:35 – William Hill Epic Boosts Handicap (Haydock) – Cerulean Bay

The British Stallion Studs EBF 'Jersey Lily' Fillies' Nursery Handicap (13:22) is the first televised race on ITV this Saturday, but we’re skipping it in favour of the William Hill Epic Boosts Handicap at Haydock.

The 1m Flat Turf Handicap is a Class 2 race with Ralph Beckett’s Centigrade (7/2) as the early favourite. However, it’s David O'Meara’s Cerulean Bay (8/1) that’s my pick for this one – a 5-year-old bay gelding with a mixed bag of results in the last 5 races. 

His second in the Golden Mile at Goodwood back in July earned him a 112 RPR, with jockey Daniel Tudhope hoping to storm home in first this time out at Haydock. He’s super well priced for each-way (EW) bets.

13:55 – Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes (Newmarket) – Haffner

• 1m – Flat Turf, Group 2, Class 1

• Runners: 7 (MAX 20)

• Good

Aidan O'Brien’s Haffner (9/2) is my next pick for this, the Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket. 

Haffner has performed consistently with a recent spell of first- and second-place finishes, instilling confidence in the racehorse. His most recent seventh-place finish in the National Stakes may look disappointing, but it came in a Group 1 after a demanding summer campaign

Racing Post gives Haffner 120 RPR, the highest in the field. Jockey Ryan Moore will be aiming to prove his rating with a justifying performance this Saturday. Again, a cracking selection that’s ripe for an EW bet.

14:10 – William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap (Haydock) – King Of Light 

• 5f – Flat Turf, Handicap, Class 2

• Runners: 12 (MAX 14)

The early favourite, Stuart Williams’ King Of Light (10/3), is my pick in the William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap. 

His last five runs – a 5th, 14th, 6th, 8th and 7th – aren’t anything particularly special – they hardly scream obvious winner. However, he has already shown he can operate at this level, winning at Windsor over 6f in June. 

But he’s won twice at Haydock previously, including this very same 5f course-and-distance race in 2024 and again in 2025. He handles soft ground well, and a return to his Haydock best would make him extremely competitive in a dozen-horse field.

14:27 – Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes (Newmarket) – Sun Goddess

• 6f – Flat Turf, Group 1, Class 1

• Runners: 6 (MAX 20)

• Good

With only six runners in the Tattersalls Sceptre Sessions Cheveley Park Stakes, Aidan O’Brien’s Sun Goddess is both the favourite and my pick for the 6f race. 

The 2-year-old filly is in phenomenal form, winning her last four races and regularly starting as the favourite. Aidan O'Brien reports she's in great form, and it’s easy to see why. In her last run at Curragh, she dominated Joseph Patrick O'Brien’s Green Empress and earned an RPR of 113. 

Ryan Moore, her regular jockey, will take the reins once more in a bid to extend her winning streak. She’s a great candidate for a simple win bet.

15:40 – bet365 Cambridgeshire (Newmarket) – Gavriel 

• 1m1f – Flat Turf, Handicap, Class 2

• Runners: 27 (MAX 35)

• Good

Next up, and the last race in today’s broadcast, it’s John & Thady Gosden’s Gavriel (11/2), who is both the favourite and my pick in the day’s feature race – the bet365 Cambridgeshire. 

He has an RPR of 115, one of the highest in the field, and despite just four career starts, he’s performed well, with two first-place finishes alongside a second-place finish at Kempton. 

The key caveat is experience – this will be only his fifth race start, and the Cambridgeshire presents a very different challenge than defeating five rivals at Ascot. However, this is also what makes him so compelling – he could still have much more potential. Well worth an EW wager.
