Royal Ascot Day 2: Best bet, each-way selection and treble

We had some excellent races to sink our teeth into at Royal Ascot on Tuesday and there’s plenty more to come, with seven more on offer on Day 2.
Wednesday’s highlight is the prestigious Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, the only Group 1 race on the card, and we’re set to see an exciting clash of Britain vs France.

Day 2 - Key info
First race: 14:30 Queen Mary Stakes
Feature race: 16:20 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes
Day 2 of Royal Ascot isn’t to be missed and we get underway with three consecutive Group 2 contests, the first of which is the Queen Mary Stakes (14:30).
The three-year-old stayers then get their chance to shine in the Queen’ Vase (15:05) and hopefully there will be some 2027 Gold Cup candidates in the field.
The day begins with the Queen Mary Stakes where Aidan O’Brien’s unbeaten filly Victorious goes for glory. One for the older fillies and mares, the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (15:40) precedes the main dish..
Our feature race is the £1,000,000 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (16:20) and the favourite Ombudsman represents Britain, with French raider Daryz providing some stiff competition.
Handicap action then follows with the Royal Hunt Cup (17:00) and the Kensington Palace Stakes (17:35), before the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes (18:10) closes out the card.
Best bet of the day
Daryz to win the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (16:20) @ 2/1
Francis-Henri Graffard’s Daryz is behind John & Thady Gosden’s Ombudsman in the betting but the punters might be on the wrong one here. Daryz brings an exceptional level of form to the table and has recently proved himself over the 1m2f trip.
He was very progressive last term and signed off with victory in one of Europe’s biggest races, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, on his final start of the campaign. Victory was achieved at the expense of Aidan O’Brien’s Minnie Hauk, who opposes once again.
This son of Sea The Stars seems to have taken another step forward this year and he was a very easy winner of the Prix Ganay at Longchamp on seasonal debut. Following up in the Prix Aga Khan IV over 1m1f, he should have enough pace for this 1m2f.
Clearly the Arc winner would prefer it if this race was run over 1m4f but Ballydoyle’s pacemaker should ensure that this race becomes a sufficient test of stamina.
Best each-way bet of the day
Green Sovereign in the Windsor Castle Stakes (18:10) @ 18/1
We won’t really know which side of the track will have the advantage until we see it because we’ve had low and high drawn winners in the last decade. Harry Eustace’s Green Sovereign was impressive when getting off the mark at Pontefract.
He looked in need of the run and the experience on debut at Kempton last month and took a massive step forward at Pontefract 18 days later.
Prominent throughout, he responded well when his jockey asked for an effort and kicked six lengths clear of the runner-up.
Obviously more will be needed now up in grade but he deserves his chance and further progress could well be on the cards.

Bet 1: Back Victorious to win the Queen Mary Stakes (14:30) @ 4/1
Aidan O’Brien dominated the two-year-old division at last year’s Royal Ascot and landed this very race last year with True Love. Victorious represents the Irishman this year and she’s unbeaten in two starts so far. The most recent of those successes came in a Group 3 at Naas and that form makes her the one to beat.
Bet 2: Back Blue Bolt to win the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (15:40) @ 5/2
Blue Bolt has finished first or second in six starts on turf and she produced a career-best effort to finish second in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket in October. She won a Listed contest on seasonal debut and will step forward from that now back up in grade.
Bet 3: Back Daryz to win the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Stakes (16:20) @ 2/1
Daryz brings a very high level of form to the table here and the Arc winner can come out on top against defending champion Ombudsman. He’ll probably want further in the long run but showed plenty of pace over 1m1f last time out.
