Ciaron Maher is no stranger to Melbourne Cup success, having landed the race with Gold Trip back in 2022, and he has a fascinating septuplet of runners for the 2026 renewal.
The one that tops the short list is Point Of Law, who has only had one run for his new connections. This son of Frankel has kept some smart company in this year’s three-year-old campaign, narrowly losing out to Del Maro on his debut, a rival who had the benefit of experience and was a Listed/Group 3 level horse at the time.
He gained compensation for that loss with a Newbury maiden success before an unlucky fourth at Royal Ascot and things have really clicked since, beating Galiyan (who ran with credit in the St Leger) in a Group 3 while also reversing form with Del Maro in that Newmarket contest.
After the purchase from the UK’s King and Queen Consort, he showed he had settled into his new surroundings just fine with a dominant performance in the Geelong Cup, beating Small Fry and Omni Man, two solid yardsticks from Britain and Ireland respectively.
He is attractively weighted here and he is entirely unexposed at this sort of trip, so there is every chance there is going to be more to come on just his sixth career start. With a handy draw in stall nine, he has plenty in his favour and should arguably be favourite for this.

The other selection has a completely different profile, having been around the block, but there are a couple of reasons to think he is going to be capable of outrunning big odds.
Formerly trained by Joseph O’Brien, he has improved for the switch down under in the last couple of seasons and while he has found it a little difficult to get his head in front, he regularly runs with credit.
His form at the Melbourne Cup distance is the factor that makes him appealing on Tuesday having won his sole start in Ireland over two miles and his only other effort at the trip was a narrow defeat when runner-up in the Sydney Cup back in April.
This is likely to have been the plan in the interim, so a couple of his subsequent runs over much shorter distances are worth forgiving, and he is another pick with a single-figure draw, which is often an advantage in the race. He looks like the value play.
