The third day of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival was largely defined by surprise victories and disappointed favorites. In the day's main event, the Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle, persistence paid off for the 11-year-old Home By The Lee, who, under trainer Joseph O'Brien, finally won the race on his fifth try.

The theme of upsets carried into the Ryanair Chase with a victory for Heart Wood, trained by Henry de Bromhead, while Jonbon experienced the familiar disappointment of finishing second for the fourth time at the festival. Another notable longshot win came from White Noise in the Ryanair Mares' Novices' Hurdle.

However, not all favorites failed to deliver. Dan Skelton's Supremely West triumphed in the Pertemps Network Final, and Wodhooh also secured a win for her backers in the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle. The day brought success for local trainers Ben Pauling with Meetmebythesea and Dan Skelton with his winner. Amateur jockey Shane Cotter also had a day to remember, riding Ask Brewster to victory in the Kim Muir Amateur Jockeys' Handicap Chase.

What can we expect from day 4 of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival?

How to Watch Day 4 Cheltenham Festival 2026

While ITV will be providing extensive coverage of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, their live broadcast will not include the final two races of each of the four days.

However, to ensure you don't miss a moment, all races will be available for live streaming to logged-in users on LiveScoreBet and Virgin Bet.

Fans can also explore the latest Cheltenham betting offers, including LiveScoreBet and Virgin Bet’s range of free bet offers available for the meeting. Ahead of the action, here’s an overview of the major race of day 4 to watch at Cheltenham Festival 2026:

Day Four: Friday – The Cheltenham Gold Cup (Grade 1)

Feature

Grade 1 at 4:00 PM with prize of £351,688 for the winner

Race Type

Hurdle race for 5-year-olds+ and with a BHA rating of 130+.

Distance

3m 2½f

Obstacles

22 fences

This is the big one and the Blue Riband of jumps racing. Friday’s Gold Cup is the most eagerly anticipated run of them all, and it’s a race where favourites tend to perform. Indeed, 19 of the last 23 winners were in the top three in the betting. Inothewayurthinkin upstaged Galopin Des Champs to win the 2025 renewal for Gavin Cromwell.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup Horses to watch:

Fact To File

Will he, or won’t he? Nobody knows if the Irish Gold Cup champion will make an appearance here. Mullins is going to make a late call on Fact To File, who is a serious contender if involved.

Jango Baie

The great British hope in a field of strong Irish entries. Winner of the Arkle at Cheltenham and the 1965 Chase at Ascot. On that kind of form, he must have a chance.

Galopin Des Champs

Twice a winner in 2023 and 2024, Willie Mullins’ serial champ came close to achieving Gold Cup glory again last year, and though his form has been patchy over the campaign, the 10-year-old could rise to the occasion again.

Verdict – Galopin Des Champs

If, as the whispers suggest, Galopin Des Champions is back to his best, he could be the one to back on proven ground, especially if Mullins leaves Fact To File in the Ryanair Chase on Thursday.
