Bow Echo is going for a hat-trick and can enhance his 2,000 Guineas credentials at Newmarket on Saturday

The curtain comes down on Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting on Saturday with a high-quality eight-race card, including a pair of Group 1s and a Group 2.

The highlight is the Cambridgeshire Handicap over 1m1f, a race first run in 1839, and the first leg of the Autumn Double has attracted a smaller field than usual, but it is still a very competitive edition with 24 runners going to post.

Here is everything you need to know for day one, including the day's best bets.

Key info

First race: 1.50pm Tattersalls Online Royal Lodge Stakes

Feature race: 3.40pm Cambridgeshire (Heritage Handicap)

The action kicks off with the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes, a juvenile contest over a mile, which was first run at Newmarket in 2005 following the redevelopment of Ascot. It was transferred here permanently in 2011 and is a key to trial for the following spring’s 2,000 Guineas, albeit Frankel in 2010 was the last winner to follow up in the Classic.

Next up is the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and it looks a strong renewal, Ed Walker’s 111-rated Royal Fixation heading a couple of talented Aidan O’Brien-trained fillies’ in the betting. Rod Millman’s Anthelia, who cost only £6,000 as a yearling, has already won over £200,000 in prize money this season and deservedly takes her chance.

The Group 1 Middle Park Stakes was won by Charlie Applebly, William Buick and Godolphin last season courtesy of Shadow Of Light and they have strong claims of a repeat — Wise Approach setting a high standard. However, Joseph O’Brien’s The Publican’s Son, who shaped with tremendous promise in a Group 3 at The Curragh on debut, could give him something to think about.

It is then onto the Cambridgeshire, a competitive nursery, two divisions of a 7f two-year-old maiden before a 0-105 handicap over 7f concludes proceedings.

Best bet of the day

Bow Echo to win the Royal Lodge Stakes (1.50pm) @ 13/8

George Boughey’s Bow Echo is unbeaten in two starts and is behind only Albert Einstein in LiveScore Bet's ante-post lists at 12/1 for next season’s 2,000 Guineas.

A wide-margin winner of a Newbury maiden on his debut last month, he made a seamless transition to Listed company in the Ascendent Stakes at Haydock at the beginning of this month, staying on strongly to beat John and Thady Gosden’s Publish by a length.

He was handed an official mark of 105 following that success, which puts him upwards of 2lb clear of his rivals with a mark.

He needs to prove his effectiveness on this track’s undulations, but the same can be said about the rest of the field.

Best each-way bet of the day

Tribal Chief to win the Cambridgeshire (3.40pm) @ 11/1

There are SIX places to play for with LiveScore Bet in the Cambridgeshire, despite the 1m1f attracting 24 runners — considerably less than the last two runnings, which had 31 and 34.

David Menusier’s Tribal Chief has progressed rapidly since going handicapping last year, rattling off four wins last season, including a hat-trick and going from 61 to 86.

He has found this year a bit more challenging, but he was a massive eye-catcher on his return over a mile here in April — running on strongly from an impossible position, following a slow start — and he was arguably better than ever at Goodwood last month when he defied a mark of 90.

Tribal Chief beat today’s favourite Treble Tee on that occasion and, while he is up another 4lb, he could very well improve for this extra furlong.

Day 3 acca

Everybody loves an accumulator and we have put three selections together for Newmarket on Saturday. Our treble pays over 155/1 with LiveScore Bet.

Bet 1: Bow Echo to win the Royal Lodge Stakes (1.50pm) @ 13/8

He’s unbeaten in two starts and created a good impression when staying on strongly to beat the well regarded Publish in what was a strong Listed race at Haydock earlier this month. .

Bet 2: The Publican's Son to win the Middle Park Stakes (3.00pm) @ 4/1

He showed a massive amount of promise in a Group 3 at The Curragh at the end of last month, finishing fast from off the pace for a closing second behind Mission Central, who’d previously won a maiden over the same course-and-distance by eight lengths. Improvement is highly likely.

Bet 3: Tribal Chief to win the Cambridgeshire (3.40pm) @ 11/1

Has done nothing but improve since going handicapping, winning four times last season and looking better than ever when beating the favourite for this race at Goodwood last month. He’s finished second on his two runs at this track, most recently on his reappearance in the spring when he came from an impossible position.
