Video: "checkmate": Trabzonspor thrash Besiktas with a Salah mask
The game is over
Trabzonspor refused to let their valuable win over Besiktas on Monday, inspired by Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, pass quietly. They fired off some heavyweight messages instead.
Ozan Tufan and Salah struck as Trabzonspor beat Besiktas 2-0, with the side continuing to shine under German head coach Thomas Reis.
Besiktas had opened official talks with Salah last summer, before Trabzonspor did, but the two parties never struck a deal. The club's president then made controversial remarks, claiming they had not wanted Salah in the first place and confirming that head coach Vincenzo Italiano had no wish to complete the move.
Trabzonspor fired two messages at Besiktas after today's meeting between the sides, a clash lit up by Salah's commanding display.
The first arrived in a video. A man carrying a bag walks up to a receptionist standing in front of the Trabzonspor logo, only to be told "your money is worthless", before another figure swaps the bag belonging to the man who appears to represent Besiktas, a nod to Salah snubbing a summer move there.
He leaves, climbs into his car and opens the bag to find a Trabzonspor shirt inside, along with a message carrying the scoreline (2-0) and the words "the three points will stay here". The camera then cuts back to the receptionist, who peels off a fake face to reveal Mohamed Salah himself.
The clip ends with "the game has begun" appearing on screen, crossed out and replaced by "game over".
A second tweet showed Salah wearing a royal crown and standing on a chessboard beneath a single word: "checkmate".
The win lifted Trabzonspor up to fourth in the Turkish league on 16 points. Besiktas slipped to fifth, their tally stuck on 15.
Salah's goal in the match also made him the outright leader in the Turkish league scoring charts this season with 8 goals.
