Besiktas star Junior Olaitan reckons he and his teammates let themselves down against Celtic despite ‘dominating’ the Europa League game at Paradise on Thursday night…

Benin international Olaitan opened the scoring for the Turkish side after acting fastest after his initial spot kick was saved by Sam Johnstone in the Celtic goal.

Besiktas then looked favourites against a Celtic side who have been devoid of confidence lately, but the Hoops upped the ante after that setback and went on to win the game thanks to a gritted and determined display of attacking football.

Despite Celtic looking like a more attacking threat due to the introduction of goal heroes Camilo Duran and Callum Osmand, Olaitan reckons it was his side’s slackness that contributed to Celtic’s win.

The Besiktas midfielder, as reported by The National, said: “It was a bad defeat because we dominated the game until we made passing errors and gave the ball away to our opponents. We started the game well and scored, but after that we lost our rhythm.

“Celtic took advantage of this and took their chances. It’s a pity because we were playing well. It;s important we recover from this painful defeat. I am sorry for our supporters that we lost this and it’s clear we need to work harder for the full 90 minutes, rather than just parts of the match.”

“We were on a good run until this match. We have to keep working. We’ll do everything necessary and try to do better.”

Whilst Olaitan is right about his side dominating possession, as the stats of 61.4% to 38.6% in their favour suggests, the overall stats prove why Celtic were victorious on the night.

Celtic had 10 shots at goal with six on target opposed to the Turkish sides 15 shots and four on target.

Celtic also made Besiktas keeper Nubel make three saves whilst Sam Johnstone was limited to just two saves. It’s clear that Celtic were more clinical in front of goal hence the reason why they won all three points.

The game is all about putting the ball in the back of the net. Celtic had an abundance of goalscoring opportunities last Sunday and also the vast majority of possession at Falkrik but couldn’t beat Scott Bain. Falkirk had limited opportunities but took their chances, so deserved their victory.

Celtic found the back of the net more times than Besiktas and were certainly worthy winners on the night. The Turkish side were nowhere near as good as perhaps expected and after three defeats in a row, Celtic were due a result that will hopefully kickstart our campaign, better late than never.
