Liverpool failed to turn their dominance into a win

Fenerbahçe produced a stunning turnaround to beat visitors Liverpool, flipping a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead inside six minutes at the Çobançeşme Stadium in Istanbul on Wednesday, in the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League.

The defeat leaves Liverpool stuck on 9 points, fifth in the standings. Fenerbahçe climb to 5 points, up to 19th.

Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. Young England midfielder Trey Nyoni unleashed a powerful strike that deflected off a Fenerbahçe player, changed direction and nestled into the net.

Four minutes later, former Manchester United man Mason Greenwood levelled in similar fashion for the Turkish side, whipping a direct free kick through the wall and past a wrong-footed Alisson Becker to make it 1-1 in the 29th minute.

Possession belonged overwhelmingly to the visitors in the first half, with Liverpool enjoying 69% of the ball to Fenerbahçe's 31%.

Yet the shot count told a different story. Liverpool fired 9 times, one against the woodwork, while the hosts managed 8, 2 of them on target.

Liverpool cranked up the pressure after the break, and Alexander Isak struck their second in the 69th minute. Fenerbahçe hit straight back with two goals, in the 73rd and 79th minutes, through Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi.

The visitors threw everything at it in the closing minutes, but the Turkish defence held firm. Fenerbahçe ran out 3-2 winners.
