Sunderland have won the FA Cup twice, most recently in 1973, and they have been involved in plenty of memorable games in the famous competition down the years.
Ahead of this weekend's fourth-round meeting with Oxford United, we take a look at five of their most notable victories in the FA Cup.
5) Shrewsbury 1-2 Sunderland (Third round, 2023)
Sometimes it is not the big matches towards the climax of an FA Cup run that are the most memorable as the early rounds can dish up their own stories too.
Arguably the Black Cats’ greatest recovery in the competition came at Shrewsbury in 2023 when they found themselves a goal down to the League One Shrews in injury-time.
It seemed the Championship side were on their way out, but late, late goals from Ross Stewart and Luke O’Nien turned the game on its head.
4) Birmingham 0-2 Sunderland (Fifth-round replay, 2004)
The Black Cats were in the second tier when they reached the semi-finals in 2004 and while they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Millwall in the last four, their best result of the run came in a replay at Birmingham, who were in the Premier League at the time.
The Stadium of Light had witnessed a 1-1 draw in the first game, and substitute Tommy Smith proved to be the hero when he knocked in a rebound after Kevin Kyle’s effort had come back off the bar, and he then sealed their passage to the last eight with a second when he kept his cool on a one-on-one.
3) Sunderland 2-0 Arsenal (Fifth round, 2012)
One of the Wearsiders' most notable FA Cup results came in 2012 when they saw off Arsenal in the fifth round.
The Black Cats recorded their 10th win in 15 games under Martin O’Neill as they proved far too strong for an Arsenal team still licking their wounds from a 4-0 Champions League defeat to AC Milan.
Keiran Richardson gave them the lead with a deflected effort before half-time and the win was confirmed when Alex Oxlade Chamberlain put through his own net.
2) Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea (Quarter-final replay, 1992)
Sunderland became the first second-tier club to reach the FA Cup final for 10 years when they lost to Liverpool in 1992, but it was their quarter-final replay victory over Chelsea that was the most memorable match of that campaign.
After a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, Peter Davenport was on hand to put Sunderland ahead from close range and they held on until four minutes from time at Roker Park, when Dennis Wise scored an equaliser with four minutes to go.
Extra-time beckoned but Gordon Armstrong headed home from a corner moments later to take them through to a Hillsborough semi-final where John Byrne’s goal was enough to send them to Wembley.
1) Sunderland 1-0 Leeds (Final, 1973)
Sunderland’s win over Leeds in the 1973 FA Cup final is undoubtedly the greatest day in the club’s history, when, as a Second Division club, they produced one of the biggest ever cup final shocks by beating arguably the best team in the land at the time.
Ian Porterfield was on hand to fire the Wearsiders into the lead and they held on for a 1-0 success, with goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery’s double save, when he somehow pushed Peter Lorimer’s shot onto the bar, going down in Wembley folklore.
