Manchester United have not made contact with any other potential candidates for the manager role at the club amid the successful spell under Michael Carrick, reports Sky Sports.

United saw the back of Ruben Amorim in January and Carrick took over soon after, getting the ball rolling with a 2-0 Manchester derby victory over rivals City.

He's since continued his inspired run in one of the hardest jobs in football, taking 23 points from a possible 30 in the Premier League to top for the form table during that time, elevating United to third in the league, with a 85.57 per cent chance of clinching Champions League football.

It's been a fantastic run and with that comes the potential that Carrick could remain in the role beyond the summer, where United are expected to consider their options.

But for now, no such considerations have been made, with Sky Sports reporting the Manchester club have 'still not made contact with any other potential candidates.'

They state the feeling at the club is that there's no need to rush into a decision when the team is performing so well. There are calls for Carrick to be made head coach but the board will ignore those until such time they are 'convinced' the former midfielder is the right man to take United forward long-term.

The report does suggest that Thomas Tuchel's recent contract renewal with England and Carlo Ancelotti's suggestion that he'd like to do the same with Brazil has 'strengthened Carrick's claim' to remain in charge at Old Trafford.

United want a manager of stature and experience if they're to part with the former Middlesbrough boss, which is why the now likely unavailable Tuchel and Ancelotti have been mentioned.

United wary of Solskjaer repeat

The report suggests United could be wary of handing Carrick the permanent role too soon, having seen what happened when he was on the staff of another former Red Devil, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in 2019.

The former striker was handed the United role then, following an interim period in which he was wildly successful in a short period of time, but the purple patch quickly faded and he was eventually sacked.

The club knows there is no need to rush into a decision, with rarely any upside, but the potential for a huge downside.

And the report is in line with the latest comments from owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who stated he is "not going there" when asked if Carrick will be given the job permanently.

Should he secure Champions League football for United, it feels there's a good chance that the boss will be in the dugout come the start of next season, but there's a while to go yet before that's confirmed.
