Sunderland have had plenty of memorable trips to Newcastle's St James' Park home

The latest edition of the Tyne-Wear derby will take place on Sunday at St James' Park in the Premier League as Newcastle United host Sunderland.

Sunderland ran out 1-0 winners at the Stadium of Light in December, their first meeting in the top flight since 2016.

The two sides are separated by only 12 miles, and it is one of the fiercest rivalries in British football.

Both teams have recorded 54 victories over each other since the first meeting in 1898 and we have taken a look at the five best Sunderland moments at the home of their arch-rivals.

Newcastle 1-9 Sunderland (December 1908)

It is hard to not start with Sunderland's biggest ever victory in the contest. Over 55,000 fans packed into St James' Park, but many locals were left stunned as the Black Cats ran riot-, winning 9-1, thanks to hat-tricks from Billy Hogg and George Holley, while Arthur Bridgett got a brace and Jackie Mordue also got himself on the scoresheet.

Newcastle 1-4 Sunderland (February 1979)

The two sides met in League Two towards the end of the 1970s, and Sunderland's iconic away win remains one of their best ever at St James' Park.

Forward Gary Rowell scored a hat-trick in the victory and he is widely regarded as one of Sunderland's best-ever players.

He scored 88 goals in 257 games for the club, but his three that day against Newcastle are arguably the most important.

Newcastle 0-3 Sunderland (April 2013)

Paolo Di Canio's stint in charge of Sunderland only lasted six months and 13 matches, but many Black Cats fans will always thank him for their derby success that season.

Sunderland were winless in nine and in the mix for relegation that season, while they had not won at St James' Park in 13 years.

Di Canio's side hammered Newcastle, avoided relegation, and it was their first of six successful derby victories against the Magpies.

Newcastle 1-2 Sunderland (November 2000)

Sunderland's win 26 years ago will be remembered for the drama at the other end of the pitch, with Newcastle legend Alan Shearer missing a penalty.

The hometown hero saw his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen and it does not get any better than that for those associated with the Black Cats.

Sunderland picked up all three points away from home, and the man they hated was partly to blame.

Newcastle 1-2 Sunderland (August 1999)

Another 2-1 derby success at the start of the 1999/2000 season is also famously remembered for an incident involving Shearer, but this time it was not his doing.

Former Newcastle manager Ruud Gullit left Shearer and Duncan Ferguson out of his starting XI against Peter Reid's newly promoted side.

It was a plan that dramatically backfired and it was a real highlight of Sunderland's season as they proved they belong with the best in the division.

Gullit was heavily criticised for overlooking his team's biggest rivals and he resigned three days later after goals from Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips secured Sunderland all three points.
