Sunderland travel to Port Vale looking to book their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday.
Here we take a look at five famous fifth-round occasions when the Black Cats have celebrated over the years.
5. Sunderland 1-0 Southampton (2014)
Southampton were in the top eight in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino when they headed to the Stadium of Light in 2014, but it was the Wearsiders who got the better of the Saints that day and secured their spot in the quarter-finals.
The game was not particularly pleasing on the eye, but what will be remembered is a thunderous effort from Craig Gardner which crashed in off the bar to ensure Gus Poyet’s side progressed to the last eight, where they suffered a 3-0 away loss to eventual finalists Hull.
4. Birmingham 0-2 Sunderland (Replay, 2004)
Sunderland made it to the semi-finals as a second-tier team in 2004, only to be beaten by Millwall at Old Trafford, but one of their best results of that run came in the fifth round when they claimed a replay win at Birmingham, who were then in the top division.
After a 1-1 draw in the initial meeting at the Stadium of Light, substitute Tommy Smith emerged as the Black Cats hero when he was first to react at St Andrew’s when strike partner Kevin Kyle saw his effort come back off the bar.
The former Watford forward then raced through and netted from a one-on-one to put the Wearsiders into the last eight.
3. Sunderland 2-0 Arsenal (2012)
It has been 14 years since Sunderland, under Martin O'Neill, claimed a big fifth-round scalp and that came when they beat Arsenal at the Stadium of Light.
The Gunners were struggling at the time and would go on to record a seventh successive season without winning a trophy.
They were already suffering a hangover from a 4-0 Champions League defeat to AC Milan, while the Black Cats posted their 10th win in 15 games.
A deflected effort from Kieran Richardson was enough to give the Black Cats the lead and the win was sealed by an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal.
2. West Ham 2-3 Sunderland (Replay, 1992)
Sunderland made it all the way to the final in 1992 as a Second Division club and one of their most memorable nights on that run to Wembley came in a fifth-round replay at West Ham.
Following a 1-1 draw at Roker Park, a replay at the home of a top-flight club looked a daunting prospect, but the Wearsiders were in dreamland when John Byrne scored two early goals.
Two Martin Allen efforts drew the Hammers level and Sunderland keeper Tony Norman had to be at the top of his game, producing a great save to deny Tim Breaker, before David Rush connected with Byrne’s flick-on to set up a quarter-final with Chelsea.
1. Sunderland 3-1 Manchester City (Replay, 1973)
A 3-1 victory over Manchester City in a Roker replay was when the Wearsiders started to believe that 1973 could be their year.
Having earned a 2-2 draw at Maine Road, more than 51,000 fans packed into the famous old ground and most were delighted when Vic Halom gave the home side a 15th-minute lead before Billy Hughes doubled their advantage shortly afterwards.
Francis Lee pulled a goal back for City but it was not enough as another Hughes strike helped Sunderland seal their spot in the quarter-finals.
From there, Bob Stokoe’s Second Division side did not look back as they went on to famously lift the trophy after beating Leeds in the final at Wembley.
