Bournemouth were the deserved winners in their game against AC Milan last night, managing to avoid any shots on target from the Rossoneri.

A lot has been said about the performance of Ruben Amorim’s men, so we won’t dwell on it too much. However, it’s clear that Milan never really came close to the level they need to be at, even before the red card of Mike Maignan.

The stats are very clear on this front too, as the home side took control of the game early on and never allowed Milan an inch.

Complete domination

Anyone who saw the game will know that Bournemouth had fantastic control from start to finish, even before the red card. Possession was heavily in their favour, albeit mostly in the second half, and they certainly kept Milan at bay.

There were 20 shots and seven of them on target for the home side, while the Rossoneri only managed three all game and had ZERO on target. The xG stat dominance was obviously affected by the two penalties, but 0.11 is just laughable.

A deserved win for Bournemouth and an embarrassing one for Milan. That is probably the best way to describe things based on the stats (and also what we saw!).

Troubles against Bournemouth

Milan have struggled against English sides in general (more on that below), but it’s also worth pointing out that Amorim has been far from successful against Bournemouth in particular. In fact, he hasn’t beaten them a single time.

He faced them three times with Manchester United, drawing twice and losing once, and yesterday’s game obviously increased the defeat tally. That’s also part of the reason why Bournemouth fans were chanting about him, resulting in that sarcastic smile on the sidelines.

As for the Rossoneri, their record against English teams in competitive games is now 14 wins, 14 draws and 23 defeats in 51 games. If the gap between the Premier League and Serie A continues to be like this, that should only continue to get worse.

Rare goalkeeper situation

Due to Maignan’s red card, we got to witness something very rare: two goalkeepers conceded a penalty in the same European Cup game. Opta started collecting this data in 2008-09 and this is the first time it has happened to Milan.

Lorenzo Torriani was the goalkeeper who came off the bench to replace the Frenchman. He didn’t come close to saving the penalty, diving the wrong way, but he at least got to make one very good save at the end of the game.
