Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty in a home Champions League match against Roma, but was given a second chance after Bryan Cristante encroached into the penalty area before the kick.

Gianluca Mancini caused the penalty early in the second half, with Roma leading 2-0, after fouling Matheus Cunha.

Man Utd vs. Roma penalty incident explained: Bruno didn’t miss second chance

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes stepped up from the spot but missed his first chance, with Roma’s third-choice goalkeeper Devis Vasquez saving the low-driven shot to his right.

Referee Jesus Gil Manzano, however, ordered a retake after VAR showed Cristante encroached into the penalty area before Bruno Fernandes struck the ball.

Cristante was the first to get to the rebound after Vasquez’s save, so the referee’s decision, as suggested by VAR, was inevitable.

Bruno Fernandes, a former Novara, Sampdoria and Udinese midfielder, didn’t miss the second chance. He once again kicked the ball to Vasquez’s right, but this time closer to the top corner, while the Roma keeper dived the opposite way.

Vasquez is playing his first competitive match for Roma, as Milan Svilar has been out for weeks and second-choice keeper Pierluigi Gollini had back problems on the morning of the game.
