As is often the case with the derby win, there were a lot of fun facts and stats to delve into after the full-time whistle, including a free-kick rarity from Diego Moreira.

Many headed into the Derby della Madonnina with a lot of worry considering Inter’s strong start to the season, as well as Milan’s mid-week defeat to Bologna. However, it turned out to be a great evening for the Rossoneri, who clinched all three points in a 3-1 win.

Diego Moreira played a key role in the success, bagging one goal and two assists, while Ruben Amorim got his tactics right as well. In short, it was just what they needed and as is often the case after a huge win, a lot of fun stats emerged afterwards.

Misleading key stats

Starting with the general stats, it’s clear that Milan made the most of their chances with a 0.66 xG and three goals scored. Moreira’s free-kick obviously didn’t yield a high xG, nor did Adrien Rabiot’s tidy effort, and Christian Pulisic’s header wasn’t super easy to pull off.

Inter had some good chances from close range, parried by Mike Maignan, so that is probably why their xG is higher. Alessandro Bastoni’s header was also an easy one, unlike Pulisic’s, but it was nice to see Milan be the efficient team for once.

The possession is linked to the above, really, as Milan sat back a lot after scoring their goals. Tactically, they played it to perfection and Inter didn’t really create much with all that possession in the end.

Unbeaten run extended

This deserves a section of its own because Milan’s recent record in the derby is truly amazing. After losing six games on the trot, the Rossoneri have certainly turned things around with six wins in the last eight encounters and no defeats!

Now the Inter fans can feel some of the pain that we experienced a while back… It’s not just that the Nerazzurri as a club have been really poor against Milan, it’s also that Cristian Chivu has failed completely.

Winning trophies is the most important thing, he’s absolutely right, but there is no question that the derby record is bothering him. As reported by Opta, he’s only the third manager to lose his first three derbies after Leonardo (2009-2011) and Massimo Giacomini (1979-1980).

Free-kicks, fast goals and a midfield king

Like we said at the start, a lot of fun facts emerged from the win last night and giving each of them a section would be a little silly. From a rare free-kick goal in the derby to a midfielder in red-hot form, we have listed them below.

Moreira’s free-kick: Since Opta started collecting the stats in 2004-05, Milan have only scored three direct free-kick goals against Inter in all competitions, with Moreira’s being the latest one. Pirlo (2007) and Theo Hernandez (2025) were the first two.

Pulisic’s speedy start: Pulisic’s goal is the fastest Milan have scored in a league derby against Inter since the 2010-11 season, when Alexandre Pato found the back of the net after a mere 43 seconds. Talk about getting off the right foot.

Rabiot’s goal contributions: Rabiot has become the third Milan midfielder to have at least one goal contribution in five consecutive league games since 2004-05, following in the footsteps of Hakan Calhanoglu (in 2020) and Ricky Kaka (2004 and 2008).
