Tuttosport: Milan considering return attempt with Athekame with talks expected in January
AC Milan are beginning to explore the possibility of an early return for Zachary Athekame, after his start to life in France.
When they signed Athekame in the summer of 2025, Milan were aware that he was a player for the future. Nevertheless, he was still given occasional minutes last season and he could’ve been given more.
He also could’ve stayed this season; in hindsight, things are viewed differently. Yet, there would be an argument that he’d have provided some quality depth in a position of makeshift options.
Athekame’s early return?
According to Tuttosport this morning, via MilanPress, the Rossoneri would be keen to bring Athekame back from his loan spell in France early for several reasons. Firstly, the Swiss has reached a new level in France this season, so his return would be a permanent one.
Then, the injury issues mean that the squad is weak at full-back. So, with Ruben Amorim looking to a four-back system more frequently, he could help a lot.
It won’t be as easy as just recalling him, though. Lyon still need to be convinced and there was no agreement for his return before the summer. With this, the French club have already hinted that a fee would be required for an early return.
Talks are expected to take place in January and with Paulo Fonseca leaving the club, Athekame’s perspective on things could change. We shall have to see.
