Spain drop Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez despite naming four keepers for November
Luis de la Fuente has left Inter's Josep Martínez out of his Spain squad, even though he is taking four goalkeepers to the Nations League games against Czechia and England. The decision keeps Chivu's starter at Appiano Gentile during the break, while Como defender Jacobo Ramón, whose club visit San Siro tonight, earns a Spain call.
Liverpool winger Víctor Muñoz is the other player from the previous group who drops out, Lanza Digital (EFE) reported.
The changes in goal are clear. Joan García returns to the squad. Unai Simón and David Raya keep their places.
Martínez’s Spain chance opened only through García’s injury
Martínez’s international path has been short. He earned his place in September after García was injured, joining Simón and Raya. Apart from an Under-21 game against Lithuania, Spain had never called him up before. He was one of four newcomers in De la Fuente’s first squad after Spain won the 2026 World Cup.
His club standing is very different. FIFA described him as Cristian Chivu’s regular starter this season after two seasons as a backup. He is expected to start against Como tonight. Instead of joining Spain, he will stay at Appiano Gentile with Chivu during the break. Inter’s other internationals head to Italy, France, Croatia and Türkiye. Italy have called up Alessandro Bastoni, Federico Dimarco and Francesco Pio Esposito for games against France in Milan and Belgium in Brussels.
The setback is personal rather than a problem for Inter. Martínez keeps his role at the club. With García back and Valles promoted, his route back into the Spain group now looks more crowded.
Como defender Jacobo Ramón earns Spain call before club’s Inter trip
One name on the list matters directly for tonight. Rodri and Dani Olmo are also absent from the squad through injury.
Chivu’s side meet Ramón’s club on the back of a 3-0 Champions League win away at Feyenoord. Inter have taken 220 total shots and Como 203, the two highest totals in Serie A this season.
Once the weekend is over, Spain turn to the Nations League. The squad reports to the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas on Monday, November 9, from 13:00. Spain top Group A3 with 12 points from four wins, with England second on nine. They face Czechia on November 12 at the Epet ARENA in Prague. England then visit the Metropolitano in Madrid on November 15. Spain have already qualified for the quarterfinals, which are scheduled for March 25 and 30.
