Cagliari welcome Juventus to the Unipol Domus on Sunday evening, hoping to extend their impressive start to the Serie A season. Fabio Pisacane’s men have emerged as one of the early surprises, but they face a Bianconeri side eager to build on two consecutive victories before the international break.

Cagliari have collected 12 points from their opening five league fixtures, recording four wins and one defeat. They most recently squeaked past Udinese at the Bluenergy Stadium, securing a narrow 1-0 victory to extend their winning streak to three. The Sardinians’ defensive resilience has proved instrumental in their rise into the top four.

Juventus, meanwhile, have accumulated 10 points from their first five matches. Luciano Spalletti’s side endured an inconsistent spell before the international break, but consecutive competitive victories, including a 2-0 triumph over Atalanta, have restored some confidence.

However, the Bianconeri must overcome a sizeable injury list and a Cagliari side that has already proved adept at frustrating stronger opponents. With both teams eager to resume their campaigns on a positive note, Sunday’s encounter promises to be a closely contested affair.

Match Preview

Cagliari

Cagliari have made an excellent start under Pisacane, spending the international break in the top four. Their current tally represents the club’s best start to a top-flight campaign since the 1969/70 season, when they famously won their only Scudetto.

The Sardinians have built their success on defensive discipline, conceding just one goal across their last three league victories. Defensively sound, Cagliari have been particularly stubborn after halftime, as they remain the only Serie A side yet to concede in the second half this term.

Home advantage could prove crucial against Juventus. Cagliari have won four of their last six Serie A fixtures at the Unipol Domus, although their historical record against the Turin giants remains a concern. A 1-0 win in this corresponding fixture last season saw the Sardinians end a dismal run of nine consecutive meetings without a victory and will now look to beat the Bianconeri in back-to-back league clashes for the first time since 2009.

Daniel Maldini could once again prove decisive for the hosts. The attacking midfielder has scored in three consecutive Serie A appearances for the first time in his career, giving Pisacane another valuable source of goals.

Juventus

Juventus head to Sardinia looking to build on an encouraging response before the international break. After dropping points in consecutive league fixtures, Spalletti’s men trounced NEC Nijmegen 5-0 in their opening Champions League fixture and followed up on that success with a precious win over Atalanta.

Despite their recent improvement, Juventus have shown some vulnerability away from home. Their 3-2 defeat to Sassuolo in their previous league outing on the road ended their seven-game unbeaten away run in Serie A (W4, D3). It was also the first time they conceded more than two goals in a single road league fixture since February.

That said, Juventus are the only Serie A side yet to concede before the 60th minute this season, suggesting that opponents must work hard to break them down. Maintaining that early defensive solidity will be particularly important against a Cagliari side that has opened the scoring in four of its five league matches.

Team News

Cagliari will be without Mattia Felici and Riyad Idrissi, while young forward Yael Trepy remains a doubt. Club captain Alessandro Deiola has also been struggling with an injury, although a late return to the squad remains a possibility. Maldini should retain his place after his recent scoring run, with Patrick Mendy expected to lead the attack.

Juventus have a more extensive list of absentees. Kenan Yildiz, Khephren Thuram, and Manuel Locatelli are unavailable, while Jeremie Boga, Kevin Ekhator and goalkeeper Kamil Grabara are also expected to miss out. Therefore, Pape Matar Sarr could partner Douglas Luiz in midfield, while Randal Kolo Muani is tipped to lead the line.

Cagliari vs Juventus Potential Starting Lineups

Cagliari (4-3-2-1): Caprile; Zé Pedro, Mina, Rodríguez, Obert; Romano, Winks, Adopo; Fazzini, Maldini; Mendy.

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly, Cambiaso; Douglas Luiz, Sarr; Zhegrova, McKennie, Alajbegovic; Kolo Muani.

Cagliari vs Juventus Prediction

Cagliari’s impressive form and defensive solidity make them a difficult opponent to overcome, particularly on home soil. Juventus have regained some momentum, but their injury problems could limit Spalletti’s options in a match that may offer few clear-cut chances. Given both teams’ recent defensive performances, we expect a tight contest to finish in a draw.
