Serie A | Lecce 0-2 Juventus: Douglas Luiz gives best performance
Douglas Luiz had the best performance of his Juventus career, scoring a goal after providing the free kick assist for Weston McKennie to conquer Lecce 2-0.
The Bianconeri were feeling the strain after a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Lazio, then a 2-2 Europa League home draw with Stade Rennais. There were only 17 outfield players available, as Nico Gonzalez and Zeki Celik joined Kenan Yildiz, Francisco Conceicao, Manuel Locatelli, Khephren Thuram, Jeff Ekhator and Kamil Grabara on the treatment table.
Lecce were all or nothing with three wins and four draws, coming off last week’s 3-0 victory away to Udinese. Lassana Coulibaly, Santiago Pierotti, Ivan Ilic and Medon Berisha missed out.
Lecce’s last victory over Juventus was 2-0 here in February 2011, followed by four 1-1 draws and now nine defeats, home and away.
Konan N’Dri pressed Guglielmo Vicario into an error within 30 seconds, while Amar Fatah’s curler was off target from the edge of the area.
Juventus took the lead with their first genuine attempt, as Douglas Luiz dinked up a free kick for Wes McKennie to spring the offside trap and slide onto it from eight yards to bundle over the line.
The Bianconeri wasted a couple of good situations with Randal Kolo Muani, first prodding wide on the Koopmeiners pull-back, then an angled drive off target from the dinked Douglas Luiz pass.
The former Aston Villa midfielder was having his best performance in the Juve jersey and scored his first goal for the club, sweeping in first-time from outside the area on a Federico Gatti lay-off to find the far bottom corner. It was also the first time in his career of registering a goal and assist in the same top flight match.
Tiago Gabriel fired wide and after the restart a weak Oumar Ngom finish was straight at Guglielmo Vicario, but a desperate Federico Gatti block deflected the Youssef Maleh strike over the bar.
Tiago Gabriel went off injured for Lecce, bit Paco Esteban’s back-heel flick on a cross from the right forced Vicario to be on his toes.
N’Dri scuffed a finish through legs and Vicario had to smother to prevent Paco Esteban pouncing on the rebound. Jeremie Boga and Juan Cabal had promising situations for Juve late on, but tried to shoot from improbable angles.
Kialonda Gaspar let the tension get to him and saw red with the last kick of the game for dissent, having made his protest against the referee too obvious to ignore.
