Serie A | Inter 2-0 Como: Fabregas cannot crack Chivu code
Inter continued their remarkable record against Como, as Francesco Pio Esposito and Marcus Thuram brought Cesc Fabregas back down to earth after nine Champions League goals.
This was a fascinating Scudetto fight and local derby, but with very different moods. The Nerazzurri suffered their first Serie A defeat of the season in the Derby della Madonnina with Milan, but then crushed Feyenoord 3-0 in the Champions League midweek. Como made history with Wednesday’s 9-1 victory away to RC Lens, their sixth straight win in all competition.
Lautaro Martinez and Luis Henrique were still out of action, but John Stones and Curtis Jones were back on the bench after several weeks. Moise Kean, Trevoh Chalobah, Assane Diao, Jesus Rodriguez and Jayden Addai didn’t make the trip.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.
The breakthrough came when Federico Dimarco robbed Lucas Da Cunha to spark the counter-attack, Marcus Thuram’s smart disguised pass sent Djed Spence down the right to roll across for the Pio Esposito tap-in from a couple of yards.
Dimarco had a big chance to double their lead moments later, but Thuram grazing his head to the Nicolò Barella cross put the Italian off and he scuffed the finish.
Inter did score again when Dimarco sent Piotr Zielinski down the left, the roll across was intercepted poorly by Alex Valle, acting as an accidental assist for Thuram to sweep home from six yards at the near post.
Robert Sanchez got down to palm a Carlos Augusto daisy-cutter round the near post, then after the restart parried the Dimarco effort when set up by Barella.
Dimarco also saw his volley deflected wide after Thuram knocked back the Barella cross, then Thuram’s angled drive skimmed the far upright after combining with Spence.
The first real Josep Martinez save wasn’t until the 63rd minute, needing to be alert on the Nico Paz strike that bounced in front of him, then Jacobo Ramon didn’t get any power on the header from a Bruno Kaiki cross.
Nico Paz came very close to reopening the game at the 84th minute when his first-time strike on the Marc-Oliver Kempf pull-back from 15 yards clipped the frame of the goal.
This was the 12th consecutive Serie A victory for Inter against Como, the only big club they have been unable to crack under Cesc Fabregas.
