Remarkable: Woltemade takes the ball from team-mate Kolo Muani and earns Juventus a point
Juventus took a point from Thursday evening's Europa League match against Stade Rennes in a 2-2 draw. Luciano Spalletti's side came from behind through a Nick Woltemade penalty after he took the ball from team-mate Randal Kolo Muani. Juventus thought they had snatched a late win, but VAR ruled out Jhon Lucumí's goal for offside.
Five minutes in, Juventus had the lead. Nick Woltemade sent Zeki Çelik through, and the Turkish defender finished coolly when one-on-one with Brice Samba: 1-0.
Rennes hit back in the 15th minute. Mousa Al Tamari capitalised on a cross from Brandon Reynolds and got the better of Federico Gatti: 1-1. Juventus sought an immediate response, but Samba made a fine save from Gatti's header to stop them retaking the lead.
Shortly afterwards, Weston McKennie had a huge chance to put Juventus back in front. Samba saved the American's first effort, and McKennie hit the post with the rebound. At the other end, Guglielmo Vicario kept out a dangerous effort from Mahamadou Nagida.
A handball in the penalty area gave Rennes the chance to turn the match on its head just before half-time. Referee Morten Krogh pointed to the spot, and VAR confirmed the decision. Boulaye Dia sent Vicario the wrong way from 12 yards: 1-2.
After the deficit drew boos from the Juventus supporters, their discontent grew after the break. Rennes remained dangerous, with Vicario denying Al Tamari. After an hour, Spalletti replaced Gatti with Nicolás González and switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Juventus won a penalty a few minutes later for a handball by Reynolds. Kolo Muani appeared ready to take it, but Woltemade took the ball and made clear to his team-mate that he wanted the kick. The Frenchman agreed. Woltemade scored in the 67th minute (2-2), and Kolo Muani was among those who embraced him.
In the closing stages, Spalletti brought on Jérémie Boga and Lucumí, among others. Lucumí thought he had scored the winner in the 88th minute when, after Rennes failed to clear a set piece, he scored via Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal. The Allianz Stadium erupted, but VAR spotted an offside and ruled out the goal, leaving it 2-2 in Turin.
