A couple of refereeing incidents are doing the rounds this morning after AC Milan’s draw against Sassuolo on Sunday night.

In the end the two sides would have to settle for a draw as Adrien Rabiot’s opening goal in the 63rd minute was cancelled out just a few minutes later by Odenthal’s equaliser. However, there is some controversy about some incidents that happened inside the Sassuolo box.

Firstly, there is a hold from Caleta-Car on Goncalo Ramos as the Milan striker attempts to make a run in behind. Any question marks about the Portuguese being offside are null and void, as it doesn’t matter until he attempts to play the ball.

Errori Arbitrali wrote: “Now, if you’re a defender and, with the ball far away and the play developing on the other side of the field, you decide to just watch the opponent (not realising that the ball was already nearly lost by the opponents) and hold him like that in the penalty area, you can’t then complain if they award a penalty against you.

“For me, that hold by Caleta-Car on Ramos is a foul punishable by penalty, all the more so because it was senseless / unnecessary. Am I exaggerating?”

Then, there is a second incident in which Van der Brempt appears to both kick the leg of Koni De Winter and also hold him by the top of his shirt. Again, neither the referee nor the VAR chief saw fit to even recommend an on-field review.

Finally, there was a dangerous tackle from Lauriente on Mario Gila as he attempted to get the ball out of the Milan box. The winger is perhaps lucky that the defender didn’t make more of it.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) reported that Gerry Cardinale was unhappy nothing more was awarded for that incident and the other ones. The officials are not the only or perhaps even main reason that Milan didn’t win, but they are again a talking point.
