Player Ratings: Genoa 1-2 AC Milan – De Winter, Pulisic and Rabiot take charge
By: Isak Möller
AC Milan responded to the criticism with an important win at Genoa on Sunday afternoon. A few players made the difference and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.
After the mid-week failure against Ferencvaros, Milan knew that three points were more or less a must against Genoa. Thankfully, aside from a dramatic ending, it was a comfortable game for the Rossoneri and a few of the players also got to send some strong signals.
If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.
Short Version
Pulisic (7.5 – MOTM): He did really well to keep his composure after receiving the ball from Ramos, making things comfortable with a two-goal lead. He was also the man who won back the ball before the first goal. In addition to the goals, it felt like he was always available and definitely helped Milan keep possession.
Hutchinson (5.5): He was the worst for me, as he didn’t really add anything in attack and also failed to run down the clock at the end. It’s a shame because there was space to exploit when Genoa pushed forward.
Amorim (6): Fielding Musah on the left actually worked out well, so kudos for that one. The rest of the eleven pretty much picked itself and tactically, while it was a good game, it wasn’t anything extraordinary. But his pre-match message seemed to work, as the players showed more desire.
Starting XI
Maignan (6.5): We saw a couple of good stops from him, including one on Vitinha in the second half, and his distribution was decent. He couldn’t really do anything about the goal either, as it was a really good effort from Ellertsson.
Gila (6): I liked his performance overall but there were a couple of moments that dragged down the rating for me, more specifically the fouls he committed. Put simply, he was a bit too rash and it was after one of the free-kicks he caused that Genoa scored their goal.
De Winter (7.5): The only poor moment came inside the first 60 seconds, when he was caught out a bit by a ball over the top, but he managed to track back and at least narrow the angle. After that, he was brilliant in his positioning, showing off with some great tackles and interceptions too. Really good.
Diawara (6): He was carded for a very rash challenge, but apart from that, he kept his calm at the back and had decent positioning throughout. It’s not like Genoa threatened Milan a lot, but enough for a pass here still.
Moreira (6.5): It was a lively start from him, I would say, with some good moments on that right flank. However, the end product wasn’t always amazing (some blocked shots), and he faded a bit attacking-wise as the game went on. Solid though and he did put in a defensive shift at the end.
Modric (7): We got to see some really nice flicks and quick play from him today. Defensively, he contributed as well, which was especially clear with a last-ditch toe-poke to avoid a 1v1 for Genoa. There was one poor pass into the middle which could have proved costly, but the rest was good.
Rabiot (7.5): He was back to his usual self today after what was a subpar display against Ferencvaros. Great movement between the lines and elegance on the ball were his main strengths, also getting the assist for the opener.
Musah (6): We have to praise him for doing well in a ‘new’ position, following the instructions from Amorim nearly perfectly. What stopped him from getting a higher rating here was the big giveaway at the end, which Genoa really should have done more with.
Cisse (7): It was a very tidy finish to give Milan the lead, showing once again that he knows how to turn up in the right place at the right time. However, for a higher rating, I would have liked to see more in his 1v1s, which weren’t always so successful.
Ramos (5.5): I’m torn here. It was unselfish to pass to Pulisic for the second goal rather than shooting himself, so that deserves praise. However, I actually think he was very sloppy in open play with heavy touches and positioning that sometimes left a lot to be desired. I suppose the big question is how much his defensive work rate is worth to the rating.
Substitutes
Terracciano (6): Surprisingly good! He had a crucial deflection on a shot from El Shaarawy and also headed the ball away quite a few times in the end, certainly contributing to the three points.
Hutchinson (5.5): He was the worst for me, as he didn’t really add anything in attack and also failed to run down the clock at the end. It’s a shame because there was space to exploit when Genoa pushed forward.
Jashari (6): We didn’t see much in terms of attacking contributions and build-up, since he came on with ten minutes to go, but he was responsible for a few clearances at the end.
Estupinan (5.5): I don’t think it was much of a foul, but in those moments, you shouldn’t even give the referee the opportunity to blow the whistle. He knows that.
The manager
Amorim (6): Fielding Musah on the left actually worked out well, so kudos for that one. The rest of the eleven pretty much picked itself and tactically, while it was a good game, it wasn’t anything extraordinary. But his pre-match message seemed to work, as the players showed more desire.
