AC Milan gave themselves a massive headache ahead of the derby and player mistakes can definitely be described as culprits. Below are the Rossoneri’s ratings for the defeat against Bologna.

It was a game that Ruben Amorim and his men wanted to win to boost their confidence ahead of Saturday’s Derby della Madonnina. However, they failed massively, conceding four goals and showing once again that they are far away from where they need to be.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Short Version

Cisse (7 – MOTM): The finishing was really good on both goals, but it’s the positioning that stands out the most. He keeps on finding the right spaces to move into. The second half was decent, not great, but he maybe should have got an assist with a great cross for Camarda.

Estupinan (3.5): I still don’t know what he was trying to do on the first goal, trying to pick up the man that Bartesaghi was already marking. He completely missed the underlapping run of Zortea. Just before that, he had made a really big mistake that resulted in a 1v1 too. Then, in the second half, he lost his man at the back post which resulted in a great chance. Just so poor.

Amorim (5): Defensively, it was just so incredibly poor and we saw all of the warning signs in the first half. No real tactical tweaks were made in that respect, just bringing on Modric due to Tomori’s injury, and it ended up costing Milan a lot. The balance was off.

Starting XI

Maignan (5.5): He perhaps could have done a little better on the second goal, but he didn’t have much time to react in fairness. The other goals had nothing to do with him; he was left completely alone by his teammates.

Tomori (6.5): The Englishman put in yet another good performance, crowned with the assist for Cisse’s second goal. His runs in attack have really proven to be useful. It’s just a shame that he had to come off after 45 minutes. Hopefully, it’s not too serious.

De Winter (5): Where to begin? I think he could have done better positioning-wise on Bologna’s first, with no one else to mark in the box, and then he completely gifted the free-kick that made it 2-1 for the guests. Some good moments too, but too many mistakes tonight. Maybe a 4.5?

Pavlovic (5): It’s an unlucky own-goal but at the same time, he watched his opponent way too much there. You have to remember to keep an eye on the ball and he was absolutely not expecting it to land there, when he really should have.

Musah (5): It was a really poor giveaway from him just before Bologna’s first goal. What followed in that sequence wasn’t brilliant from his teammates either, but he should have done a lot better. He had to play right-back in the second half and didn’t exactly do a brilliant job.

Jashari (7): Along with Cisse, he was definitely Milan’s best player tonight. It felt like he won every single 50-50 ball and his running never stopped, making himself available everywhere on the pitch. Really encouraging and just sad his performance will end up in the shadow of the defeat.

Hutchinson (6.5): He basically created the first goal with great pressing and was also somewhat involved in the second. On top of that, he won the ball back a lot, using his acceleration to surprise the opponents. Not far away from a 7.

Cisse (7 – MOTM): The finishing was really good on both goals, but it’s the positioning that stands out the most. He keeps on finding the right spaces to move into. The second half was decent, not great, but he maybe should have got an assist with a great cross for Camarda.

Bartesaghi (5): It’s an unlucky own-goal but at the same time, he watched his opponent way too much there. You have to remember to keep an eye on the ball and he was absolutely not expecting it to land there, when he really should have.

Ramos (4.5): He looked super sluggish from the start and that didn’t improve for the better as the game went on. Lost a lot of duels, didn’t have success with his first touch and didn’t give much in terms of combining with his teammates. Just very poor.

Substitutes

Modric (6): I don’t really know what he could have done differently. He came on, made himself available, and tried to push Milan forward with his passing.

Diawara (5): After such an encouraging display against Udinese, this wasn’t great. He sold himself completely on the third goal, even if that was fantastic from Mbangula.

Pulisic (6): Dropped down a lot to try to make things happen and had a good header saved at the end. It’s just not possible for him to do so much when he’s combining with subpar teammates.

Camarda (5): He missed a big chance with a header, even if it was close, and then had a big giveaway in the middle which led to Bologna’s final goal. Again, the header was close, but you can definitely demand that he should score there.

Comotto (N/A): I didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

The manager

Amorim (5): Defensively, it was just so incredibly poor and we saw all of the warning signs in the first half. No real tactical tweaks were made in that respect, just bringing on Modric due to Tomori’s injury, and it ended up costing Milan a lot. The balance was off.
