Player Ratings: AC Milan 0-2 Ferencvaros – Torriani howler; several struggle
By: Isak Möller
AC Milan failed to revive their Europa League campaign, losing 2-0 at home to Ferencvaros. Several players failed to perform and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.
After a mere three points in three games, Milan headed into the clash knowing that a win was more or less a must. Sadly, that didn’t show on the pitch as Ferencvaros deservedly got all of the glory, with the Rossoneri struggling on many fronts.
If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.
Short Version
🥇 There was no MOTM tonight.
👎 Torriani (4.5): It wasn’t the kindest of backpasses just before the first goal, but man, he needed to do so much better with the first touch. Heavy with all caps would be the way to describe it. In fairness to him, he couldn’t do anything about the first goal and made several good stops throughout.
👔 Amorim (4): In my opinion, this was more of a tactical failure rather than individuals letting Milan down. Ferencvaros had full control of the game and not even bringing on the big guns helped the gaffer. We all warned that the rotation perhaps wasn’t the best idea either.
Starting XI
Torriani (4.5): It wasn’t the kindest of backpasses just before the first goal, but man, he needed to do so much better with the first touch. Heavy with all caps would be the way to describe it. In fairness to him, he couldn’t do anything about the first goal and made several good stops throughout.
Terracciano (5): Was he the difference between a win and a defeat? Absolutely not, but also showed (once again) that he’s just not good enough. Poor defending on several occasions, cheap tricks that many referees would punish, and a general insecurity in possession. The cross attempt in the second half says it all.
De Winter (5.5): That backpass for Torriani should never be played in that way, even if Maignan is between the sticks. He admittedly got a bit unlucky with his clearance in the second half, but even then perhaps he could have done better. Anyway, for me it’s the pass which brings his rating down.
Diawara (5.5): He got beaten a few times at the back, but there weren’t any fatal errors and there were also a couple of good moments. However, overall, I would say it was just below an average display by him.
Bartesaghi (5): He knows how to run on the left flank, that’s for sure, but more often than not he doesn’t really get to the ball even if the pass is good. Also struggled a bit in possession tonight. One sequence was very telling when he tried to shield the ball and lost out completely instead.
Hutchinson (5): Awfully quiet in the first half and when he did get going in the second, there wasn’t much end product to his game. One good save denied him a goal, but he also missed a very good chance and didn’t have any luck with his crosses, really,.
Musah (5): There was one really poor giveaway at the start of the first half, in a proper Musah-esque way, and it probably should have resulted in a goal. Nothing about the rest of his performance was convincing either.
Jashari (5): Just like Musah, he nearly gifted a goal with a huge giveaway in the first half and it wasn’t a surprise to see him come off in the second half. The long balls didn’t have much accuracy and he struggled with Ferencvaros’ pressing.
Cisse (5.5): Milan didn’t really attack much in the first half, so that didn’t help him at all. However, even when he did end up in possession, I don’t think he was that good.
Rabiot (5): Given he wore the captain’s armband tonight and arguably is one of Milan’s best players, this was way below what we can demand from him. No luck in attack, both in terms of passes and finishes, and he also lost the ball a few times when the away side pressed high.
Ramos (5): The €74m man continues to struggle. There were some positive glimpses tonight and you cannot single him out as the worst player on the pitch, but he still needs to do so much more in his role.
Substitutes
Gila (5): He was way too rash just before the second goal, which opened up all the space even if Ferencvaros got a bit lucky. Before that, he had a poor giveaway and also had one right at the end, playing a weak pass to Torriani.
Moreira (6): As expected, the Belgian added energy to the game and also had some success on that right flank, sending several dangerous crosses into the box.
Pulisic (6): Just like Moreira, there was a noticeable difference as Milan were able to keep hold of the ball in the final third for much longer. However, the tactics probably let him and Moreira down in terms of actually being able to do something.
Modric (6): It didn’t take long for him to show that he remains fresh even at that age with a sprint to take control of the ball, and the rest was solid.
The manager
Amorim (4): In my opinion, this was more of a tactical failure rather than individuals letting Milan down. Ferencvaros had full control of the game and not even bringing on the big guns helped the gaffer. We all warned that the rotation perhaps wasn’t the best idea either.
