Inter and Milan finally presented the plans for the new 71,500-seater arena at San Siro, which will be called Generali Stadium, feature an X-frame structure and double-curved roof, but construction won’t begin until 2028.

The structure has been over a decade in the making, but the years of blocked projects saw the original design scrapped, forcing them to start afresh.

The new designs were presented at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan this evening, provided by Foster+Partners and MANICA in a collaboration between architects Lord Norman Foster and David Manica.

These same figures united to design the new version of London’s Wembley Stadium.

Generali Stadium plan unveiled

As confirmed earlier, it will be called the Generali Stadium, as the naming rights have been sold to the Italian insurance giant for a reported €26m per year in a contract set to run for 25 years.

That would take the total revenue from the deal to €650m, which if confirmed would be second only to the Atletico Madrid agreement with Riyadh Air for the Wanda Metropolitano at €28-33m per year.

However, in European competitions it will be called Milano Stadium instead.

The concrete X-frame structure on the outside is inspired by the iconic Duomo Cathedral in Milan, rising to support the double-curved roof.

This will frame and emphasis the two ‘Curvas’ with the Nord hosting Inter fans and the Sud for AC Milan supporters.

There are two seating tiers to form a continuous 360-degree bowl, ensuring excellent sightlines for everyone in the stands, with seating inclinations of up to 37 degrees.

Both clubs came together to purchase the land that includes the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in November 2025, although it was only recently given the final go-ahead after appeals to block the sale were rejected.

Notably, the statement explains construction is expected to begin in 2028 and the first match is targeted for the 2031/32 season, which is slightly later than the previous timeframe of work starting in 2027.

The aim is to host matches at the EURO 2032 tournament, which Italy is co-hosting with Turkiye.

This is part of not just a stadium, but an urban regeneration project for 281,000 square metres, including new public spaces, green areas, leisure and retail destinations.
