Official: AC Milan and Inter unveil new 71,500-seat ‘Generali Stadium’
The big day has finally arrived: AC Milan and Inter will unveil the details of their new stadium, along with design studios Foster+Partners and Manica.
Just two days before the derby, Milan and Inter fans – as well as the rest of the footballing world – will be able to admire the first images of how the new stadium will look. Some details have been known for some time, but can be hard to visualise.
For example, the 71,500-seat capacity was known, of which between 8,000 and 13,000 will be dedicated to premium seating. The shape leaked out too, which will be oval rather than rectangular like the current San Siro.
It was also known that the new stadium will only have two tiers (not three) and will be built on a podium (with parking lots underneath the pitch). The stands will have a 37-degree inclination like the ‘Yellow Wall’ in Dortmund.
A lot of other features have made it into the press like the heavy presence of team-specific LED boards as well as all the extra amenities, but as mentioned it can be quite hard to form an image in one’s mind about how that will look. Now, we don’t have to guess.
The press release
AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano today unveiled Generali Stadium, their future home: a new stadium conceived to carry the spirit of San Siro into a new era and become a new landmark for Milano.
More than a football stadium, the project represents a long-term investment in the future of two of world football’s most historic Clubs, a new home for generations of supporters, and a destination designed to contribute to the cultural, economic and urban development of the city.
The unveiling marks an important milestone in a journey that continues to transform ambition into reality. It offers the first comprehensive look at a stadium designed to honor the legacy of San Siro while creating a world-class experience built for the future of football.
The project is driven by a shared long-term vision from the Clubs and their respective owners, RedBird Capital Partners and Oaktree, part of Brookfield’s credit platform.
It represents a defining investment in the future of both organizations, creating the infrastructure needed to support sustained sporting success, unlock new opportunities for growth, and strengthen their ability to compete and win at the highest international level.
At the same time, the project reflects a broader ambition: to contribute to the modernization of Italian football while reinforcing Milano’s position as one of Europe’s most dynamic, innovative and globally recognized cities.
The architectural vision has been developed by Foster + Partners and MANICA, bringing together Lord Norman Foster, one of the world’s most influential contemporary architects, and David Manica, one of the leading designers of sports venues worldwide.
Building on a collaboration that dates back to the design of London’s Wembley Stadium, the partnership combines architectural excellence and stadium expertise to create a destination rooted in Milano’s identity while looking firmly to the future.
The naming partner
The new stadium will carry the Generali name through one of the largest stadium naming rights agreements in global sport.
A partner from day one, Generali – an Italian leader and one of the largest insurance and asset management groups worldwide – shares the Clubs’ long-term commitment to Milano and the ambition to help shape its future, strengthening the city’s position on the global stage while creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.
Beyond naming rights, Generali will also serve as Official Insurance Partner of both Clubs, becoming part of the moments, emotions and shared experiences that will bring the stadium to life.
Every great city is defined by places that become part of its identity. Inspired by Milano’s architectural heritage and design culture, Generali Stadium has been conceived as one of those places.
At the heart of the design is a striking structural form, whose powerful rhythm recalls both the legacy of Italian engineering and the intricate craftsmanship of the Duomo di Milano. The concrete X-frame structure extends from the naturally ventilated colonnades through the façade and rises to support the stadium’s defining roofline.
Diamond-shaped entrance structures welcome visitors and create moments of discovery on arrival, offering glimpses into the stadium before opening onto panoramic concourses with sweeping views across the city.
Above, a distinctive double-curved roof defines the venue’s silhouette. More than an architectural statement, it frames and emphasizes the two iconic “Curvas”, creating a powerful visual identity while integrating photovoltaic technology, acoustic optimization and other sustainability features essential to a modern stadium.
The result is a design that is unmistakably contemporary, yet deeply connected to Milano’s character, creativity and global outlook.
Preserving what matters most
While the architecture is new, the ambition is clear: preserve the atmosphere, emotion and sense of belonging that make San Siro one of football’s most iconic stages.
With approximately 71,500 seats, Generali Stadium has been designed around one principle above all else: bringing supporters closer to the action and maximizing the intensity of the matchday experience.
Two seating tiers form a continuous 360-degree bowl, creating exceptional sightlines and an immersive connection between fans and pitch. At either end, the iconic Curvas rise as single, steep walls of support, drawn forward toward the field of play with seating inclinations of up to 37 degrees to amplify both atmosphere and visual impact.
Engineered to capture and intensify crowd energy, the stadium’s acoustic design ensures supporters remain at the heart of the spectacle, helping create an environment designed to be among the most atmospheric in world football.
Enhanced accessibility, modern hospitality concepts and a broad range of seating options, from world-class premium experiences to popular seating areas, will ensure the venue welcomes every generation of fan, while offering new ways to experience the game.
The result is a stadium designed to bring supporters closer than ever before to the moments that matter most.
A stadium built for the future, while remaining deeply connected to everything that makes San Siro special: the emotion, the atmosphere, the unforgettable European nights, the great champions and, above all, the fans who give the stadium its soul.
A new destination for Milano
Generali Stadium is conceived not only as the home of AC Milan and Internazionale, but as one of the city’s most important new destinations.
At the center of a wider 281,000-square-meter urban regeneration project, the development will transform the surrounding area into a vibrant district that is active throughout the year, integrating new public spaces, green areas, leisure and retail destinations into the fabric of the city.
Designed to welcome residents, visitors and fans from around the world, the district will offer opportunities to experience the Clubs, their heritage and their communities beyond matchdays, creating new places to gather, connect and celebrate. The ambition extends far beyond football. The project will create a year-round destination for sport, culture and entertainment while contributing to the attractiveness and international appeal of Milano.
Sustainability is embedded throughout the development, with solutions including natural ventilation, photovoltaic energy generation and a range of measures designed to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact and support long-term operational performance.
From vision to reality
The unveiling marks another significant milestone in the journey toward delivering the new stadium, following the historic agreement reached between the two Clubs and the City of Milano in 2025, which laid the foundations for the transformation of the San Siro area.
The project will now advance through the next stages of design and planning, with construction expected to begin in 2028 and the first match targeted for the 2031/32 season, subject to the necessary approvals.
For AC Milan and Internazionale, Generali Stadium represents far more than an infrastructure project. It is an investment in sporting ambition, in future generations of supporters and in the long-term future of both Clubs.
It is the platform that will help sustain growth, strengthen competitiveness, and create new opportunities on and off the pitch. Above all, it is a commitment to the people who will fill it. A new home for football. A new landmark for Milano.
