MN: Why Fonseca’s shock exit could bring forward Athekame’s Milan return
Paulo Fonseca is leaving Lyon and it could have a knock-on effect for AC Milan in the winter mercato, it seems.
With Athekame’s rise at Lyon, there are several people to thank. However, Fonseca deserves substantial praise for getting the most out of the young Swiss defender. Indeed, he always showed signs of promise and now, it’s tangible.
The Portuguese gave him a starting role in his defence, and he hasn’t looked back, playing Athekame nine times in Ligue 1 this season. However, things could change now.
Athekame back without Fonseca?
According to MilanNews, Fonseca’s departure – headed to Sporting – could ‘alter the balance’ at the Groupama Stadium and offer an opportunity for the Rossoneri to recall their player. After all, he was heavily against his departure in mid-season.
For Athekame, the prospect of working under a new coach may not be as rewarding, too. So, he may also prefer a return to the Diavolo, where a role is ready for him on the right of Ruben Amorim’s back four.
There is no recall clause in the deal, so it won’t be easy and will likely require some financial outlay. Nevertheless, Fonseca may have helped Milan here, even if it’s only indirectly. More about his situation should be learned over the next few weeks.
