AC Milan beat Inter 3-1 at San Siro on Saturday, and Inter's wait for a derby win goes on. The result gives Lazio a chance to pull clear at the top of Serie A.

Saturday’s derby on October 31 handed the Nerazzurri their first league defeat of the season. All four goals came before half-time.

Inter’s last derby win remains the 2-1 victory on April 22, 2024, which clinched the club’s 20th Scudetto. Milan have now gone eight meetings in a row without losing to Inter.

Milan scored three times before half-time despite Inter’s control

Milan struck twice in the opening 10 minutes. Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the 4th minute, and Adrien Rabiot doubled the lead in the 10th. Alessandro Bastoni pulled one back in the 22nd minute. Opta recorded that the header, from a Çalhanoğlu corner flicked on by Manuel Akanji, was his first derby goal in his 20th derby appearance.

Moreira restored the two-goal lead in the 43rd minute with a direct free kick. According to Opta, that was only the third direct free-kick goal by a Milan player in the derby since its data began in 2004-05. Moreira finished with a rating of 9.02 and later picked up a yellow card for dissent.

Inter dominated the ball. They had 57% possession, 525 passes to Milan’s 409 and 11 corners to 3. They hit 8 shots on target, but Mike Maignan made 7 saves. Inter also had a penalty canceled after a VAR review in the 75th minute, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan involved. Hakan Çalhanoğlu created 5 key passes before leaving after 72 minutes.

Chivu told the club’s website that Inter got their start wrong and had to make do because of injury and illness problems. He said a Maignan save denied them a chance to make it 2-2, and that Milan deserved credit. Before the game, he had pointed out that Inter lost both league derbies last season and still won the Scudetto.

Lazio can move clear before Inter travel to Rotterdam

The defeat ended a run of four straight wins for Inter in all competitions. Inter stay second after 10 games with a record of 8-1-1, while Lazio have played 9. AS Roma sit third with 24 points, while Milan climbed to 21.

Lazio host Cagliari in their Matchday 10 game on Sunday, November 1 at 15:00. A Lazio win would push Inter further back before their European trip. Marcus Thuram has 5 league goals for Inter.

Chivu said Inter must get their energy and attitude back quickly. Inter visit Feyenoord at De Kuip in Rotterdam on Tuesday, November 3 at 21:00 CET. The Matchday 4 game of the Champions League league phase is their first away fixture after hosting Club Brugge and Shakhtar Donetsk.
