AC Milan fell to their first Serie A defeat of the campaign last night as they were beaten by Bologna at San Siro.

Things seemed to be going well at half-time after Alphadjo Cisse’s brace had overturned an early goal from Mbangula. However, the former Juventus man would score twice in the second half after an own-goal had levelled things, to give the Rossoblu a famous and rare win in Milan.

Taking chances

The general stats paint an interesting picture, with Milan having two-thirds (67%0 or the ball. Despite this, they had fewer total shots, shots on target, corners and a lower Expected Goals number, albeit not by much.

What is also intriguing is that the big chances number for both teams was 4, which shows that the Rossoblu took all of theirs whereas the Rossoneri fell behind and lost because they did not.

The headline individuals

Alphadjo Cisse (20 years, 6 days) is the third-youngest player of Milan to score a goal with both his right and left foot in a Serie A match in the last 20 years, after Alexandre Pato in January 2009 and Stephan El Shaarawy in September 2012.

Samuel Mbangula is only the second player to score a hat-trick away against Milan in the three-points-for-a-win era in Serie A, after Gabriel Batistuta (September 26, 1998, wearing the Fiorentina shirt).

Raffaele Palladino became only the third manager to win each of his first three Serie A away games in charge of Bologna, after József Violak (between September and October 1946) and Gyorgy Sarosi (between November and December 1957).

Curses broken

Milan went into last night unbeaten in their last 10 home matches against Bologna in Serie A (W8 D2), with their last home defeat dating back to January 6, 2016 (0-1 with a goal from Emanuele Giaccherini).

Since 2016-17, Bologna were one of two teams against whom the Rossoneri have played at least the same number of home matches without losing in the league, the other being Torino (W7 D3).

The Rossoneri had lost only one of their last 21 Serie A matches against Bologna (1-2 on February 27, 2025 – W16 D4) prior to last night, winning the three most recent ones.

Furthermore, after the 1-0 on September 14, 2025 and the 3-0 on February 3, the Rossoneri failed to win three consecutive clean sheets against the Rossoblu in the league for only the second time in their history, after the three between May 2016 and May 2017.
