L’Équipe: Red Bull gives you wings – Milan watch from afar as Nkunku rediscovers smile in Leipzig

AC Milan can only watch on as Christopher Nkunku has returned to shine in the place where he enjoyed the best spell of his career.

Nkunku is now back on loan at RB Leipzig from Milan and is rediscovering consistency and impact in Germany, relaunching himself after a mixed first season with the Rossoneri that followed his move for around €40m.

L’Équipe (via MilanVibes) report on his resurgence, highlighting the player’s return to the levels he displayed between 2019 and 2023, when he established himself as one of the brightest talents in the Bundesliga and European football.

What the future holds

The most obvious sign of this came on October 10th, in the league match against Eintracht Frankfurt. Nkunku scored a hat-trick in just 38 minutes, contributing in a big way in Leipzig’s resounding 6-0 victory.

It was a performance that confirmed his ability to make an impact in the final minutes and convert chances into goals, winning the ball home after his last appearance in his first Bundesliga season.

Michael Ballack, former German international and commentator for DAZN Germany, praised his qualities, describing him as one of the most exciting players in the league: elegant in his control of the ball and particularly effective in front of goal.

Willi Orbán also highlighted the value of his team-mate, emphasising the importance of not only his contribution on the pitch, but also his importance in the dressing room.

The Frenchman explained that Leipzig holds wonderful memories and that he immediately embraced the opportunity to return. Since his arrival, he said, he’s found a familiar environment, where he feels at ease again and the best place to express his way of playing.

Attention now turns to the future. According to L’Équipe, RB Leipzig may consider purchasing the player permanently given they have a €28m option. His performances in recent weeks strengthen the prospect of a permanent stay in Germany, although a final decision has not been made.

The Rossoneri are monitoring developments, aware that after the difficulties he experienced with them, the winger seems to have regained confidence and consistency. The match against Bayern Munich – scheduled for 18:30 CEST – will be another showcase.
