Lazio Reach Agreement in Principle on Amended Stadio Flaminio Project
Lazio have reportedly found common ground with the local Superintendency regarding the Stadio Flaminio project.
Lazio Plan to Make The Stadio Flaminio Their New Home
The Biancocelesti have been sharing the Stadio Olimpico with their arch-rivals Roma for decades, but the two clubs are heading in separate directions. The Giallorossi are looking to build their own stadium from scratch, while Lazio’s plan is to renovate the currently defunct Stadio Flaminio. Club president Claudio Lotito is hoping to have the venue ready by the end of 2030 or the start of 2031.
Lazio Have Overcome Bureaucratic Hurdles
The Aquile have already presented their initial project, which received a favourable opinion from the municipality of Rome. However, the long bureaucratic procedure requires a green light from the Superintendency (a state committee entrusted with preserving the country’s cultural heritage), who flagged two main issues in the original design.
Lazio Reach Agreement With the Superintendency on Two Main Issues
According to Il Messaggero, Lazio have been able to reach an agreement in principle with the Superintendency on an amended version. The club agreed to decrease the stadium’s height by reducing its capacity from 50,000 to 47,000 seats. The aim is to comply with the architecture of the surrounding area and avoid overshadowing the nearby Renzo Piano Auditorium.

The second knot was related to the Flaminio’s distinguished canopy, which is a key element of Pier Luigi Nervi’s original design. The two parties agreed that demolishing the canopy could be the best solution for public safety given its deteriorated status, especially amid the lack of maintenance in recent decades.
The next step for Lazio is to officially present its amended project to the municipality, which in turn will send it to the Superintendency.
