Lazio Fans to Take Over at Mapei at 10,000 Flock to Sassuolo
The travelling Lazio supporters could outnumber their hosts on Tuesday, as 10,000 join the team on the trip to Sassuolo.
Lazio Fans Refusing to Attend Home Games
The club’s organised fan groups have been refusing to attend home games at the Stadio Olimpico since January, as part of their ongoing protest against unpopular Lazio president Claudio Lotito. The aim is to deprive the administration of matchday revenue and pile more pressure on the patron, who is being urged to sell the club.
Last week, Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani urged the fans to reconsider their decision, especially with the team registering sensational results since the start of the Serie A campaign, winning seven and drawing one in their first eight league contests. However, the supporters’ groups swiftly rejected the invitation, insisting that their rift with Lotito goes well beyond sporting results.
Lazio Able to Count on Large Support on the Road
While a small section of the fanbase has been attending Lazio’s home games, large numbers have been accompanying Gennaro Gattuso’s men in their travels, as witnessed in Bologna, Udine, Venice, and most recently Turin (against Juventus).
Travelling Lazio Supporters Will Invade Sassuolo
According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the midweek schedule will do little to deter the loyal club supporters, as 10,000 strong will make the trip to Sassuolo to support the Biancocelesti on Tuesday.
A Déjà Vu at the Mapei?
The Mapei Stadium’s current capacity is circa 21,000, with only 4,000 seats allocated to away supporters. However, we’ve seen travelling supporters invade this particular ground in the past, most famously AC Milan fans who took over the stands to watch Stefano Pioli’s men clinch the Scudetto title on the final day of the 2021/22 season.
